Located in Wayne County
First established as an agricultural township in 1847, the City of Taylor found its stride during the automotive industry's boom and was eventually incorporated as a city in 1968. Today, the 24-square-mile city is home to major employers like Corewell Health Taylor Hospital, Load One and the Henry Ford Medical Center.
Three-bedroom ranch-style homes are common throughout Taylor, but the city offers many options, from condos to colonial revival homes, single-family Craftsman homes to townhouses. Most were built around the mid-1900s, so fully remodeled homes are easy to find. Condos and townhouses range in price from $60,000 to $260,000, while single-family home prices range from $100,000 to $400,000. The median home price in 2024 was $178,500, up 14% from the previous year.
Taylor’s parks include an interesting array of outdoor activities, including a petting zoo, fishing ponds, playgrounds and an 18-hole golf course. Home to the city’s petting zoo, Heritage Park holds numerous sports fields, a splash pad, a library and the Taylor Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. Golf enthusiasts have a choice of courses, including Taylor Meadows and Lakes of Taylor. Taylor SportsPlex provides indoor recreation throughout all seasons, including basketball and ice hockey, with open public skate sessions including weekend DJ and Light Show skates.
Though a small city, Taylor has plenty of things to do. Arts and culture destinations include the Taylor Veterans Museum and the Cinemark Theater. The city also hosts a full calendar of annual events like the Taylor Summer Festival and Winterfest. Heritage Park is home to the Junior League World Series, the world championship for baseball teams of 13- and 14-year-old players.
One of Taylor’s busiest shopping and dining districts lies in the city’s south side. Southland Center, the Taylor Retail Center and surrounding chains like Best Buy and Dick’s Sporting Goods give residents their choice of shopping stops. The area also has several restaurants, such as BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, Culver’s and Bubba’s 33. For groceries, the city offers chains like Kroger, Meijer and Gordon Food Service Store.
The Taylor School District earns an overall C from Niche. The district is home to more than 5,500 students across eight elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The high school fosters positive mental health with reset spaces and “calm corners” for students. Graduating students don’t have to leave the area for a post-secondary education, with Wayne State University 15 miles away and University of Michigan’s main campus at Ann Arbor less than 30 miles away. Wayne Community College’s Downriver Campus sits less than 4 miles from downtown.
Interstates 75 and 94 run through the city and provide routes to downtown Detroit, West Michigan and the rest of the country. By way of the interstate, downtown Detroit is just under 18 miles from Taylor, and Ann Arbor is 29 miles away. The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport offers international flights less than 5 miles from downtown Taylor. As the city’s Level IV trauma center, Corewell Health Taylor Hospital provides the city with emergent health care.
Data from the environmental risk site First Street indicate Taylor has a moderate risk of wildfires, poor air quality and the possibility of extreme heat conditions in the next 30 years. Besides environmental risks, the city’s crime rates have slowly increased over the years. In December 2019, the Taylor Police Department recorded 73 violent crimes. In January 2024, the department recorded 130 violent offenses. Karl Ziomek, Taylor’s Director of Communications and Marketing, says the Taylor Police Department has responded to increasing crime with several progressive measures. "Taylor Police are currently involved in a ton of campaigns that involve community policing. They are one of the top Downriver law enforcement agencies when it comes to new technology. Recently, they added the StarChase GPS 'dart' system to avoid high-speed chases and purchased a RAD DOG, which is a robotic dog," he says.
