Torrance makes it easy to work and relax

Out of all the cities in California’s South Bay, Torrance is one of the largest, where residents are close to the Pacific Ocean and routes to downtown Los Angeles. You can work close to home at major employers like Robinson Helicopter Co., but you can also commute to nearby hubs like SpaceX in Hawthorne. It’s not all about work in Torrance, though. You might spend the day on Torrance Beach, visit one of the spacious local parks or explore all three levels of the Del Amo Fashion Center mall.

Torrance's neighborhoods each have something different

Multiple neighborhoods make up Torrance, and each has something a little different. “Basically, people are looking at affordable ways to be in one of the beach cities,” says Joseph McMahon, an experienced Realtor with Keller Williams South Bay Realty. “[You] can move into Torrance, get a great school district and more affordable prices. Some parts are more expensive, like South Torrance bordering on Redondo. It has a very traditional feel, in terms of houses.”

There are bungalows and ornate Craftsman homes in Old Torrance, as well as newer condos and townhomes. There are tree-lined streets and ranch-style homes in West Torrance. North Torrance, East Torrance and Del Amo have some of the more affordable options in the city. Seaside is a standout neighborhood because it’s close to the ocean, and it’s sometimes called Sleepy Hollow when residents decorate trees in the area with Christmas lights every winter. Across Torrance, the median sale price is around $1.1 million. The city's prices are usually lower than in nearby Redondo Beach, but residents still have easy access to the beach and amenities.

Residents are close to plenty of highly rated public schools

The highly rated Torrance Unified School District serves the city with around 32 schools in total. “We have great schools — they’re routinely recognized as California Distinguished Schools because they have some amazing programs,” says Assistant City Manager Danny Santana. Torrance Elementary School is one of the schools that offers a Dual Language Immersion program. The four high schools, including North High School, give students the chance to enroll in Career Technical Education courses that cover topics like Engineering & Architecture.

Discover all the outdoor places in Torrance to enjoy

Torrance Beach is probably the place where everyone escapes every now and then. McMahon says you can even smell the ocean breeze in the evenings, even if you’re miles away. There is never a shortage of ways to get outdoors in Torrance, as the city is home to over 30 parks. When you want to be outside, the most popular spots are:

  • Miramar Park, which has open grass and benches that offer views of the ocean
  • Columbia Park, the largest park in the city, known for its cherry trees and community garden
  • Charles H. Wilson Park, with its baseball fields, tennis courts and splash pad
The Torrance Certified Farmers Market is held at Wilson Park on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the year, and the park’s amphitheater is the venue for the Torrance Summer Nights live concerts.

From exploring the Del Amo Fashion Center to dining out at local spots

Torrance is home to the three-story Del Amo Fashion Center. The indoor-outdoor mall has over 240 stores, from national chains to local boutiques. “People just go there sometimes if it’s really hot and walk in the air conditioning,” McMahon says. There are plenty of restaurants outside the mall, from the Torrance Bakery to Sushi Inaba, a Michelin-starred restaurant. "The downtown commercial districts are very walkable, with a big focus on mom-and-pop shops," Santana says.

Working close to home or taking short commutes

McMahon says that when he talks to Torrance residents, they always mention similar benefits of living in the city, one of which is transportation. “They mention the freeway access, because it’s really easy to get to other places,” McMahon says. You have direct access to Interstate 405, and Interstate 110 is nearby. Some people work locally at Torrance Memorial Medical Center or companies like Robinson Helicopter Co., while others commute to major hubs like SpaceX in Hawthorne.

There are multiple public transit options for getting around the city, including buses operated by the Torrance Transit System or the Los Angeles County Metro Transit Authority. Los Angeles International (LAX) is just 10 miles away when using the 405 — a drive that can take over an hour during rush hour. Traffic is a fact of life for residents because “you have to get to or go through Torrance to do anything,” Santana says.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
