A not-so-hidden gem found 9 miles north of Greenville, South Carolina, is a community backdropped by the Blue Ridge Mountains, finding buzz for its diverse nature areas and locally operated downtown. Travelers Rest – known to locals as TR – was always a place for explorers and livestock herders to find a respite from the Southern heat at the foothills of the mountains. After the placement of railroads and roads, the town only continued to grow into the thriving community it is today. It's a popular stopping point for those visiting the several surrounding state parks, but it's a permanent home for just around 8,000 people. "It's become a trendy, revamped area. You’ll see people lined up to order crepes outside of a yellow Volkswagen-turned-food truck, tourists renting out kayaks and heading out for the day, things like that," says Kimmi Warga, Realtor at EXP Realty who’s been selling homes in South Carolina for nearly 20 years.

The local businesses of Main Street
Downtown Travelers Rest is where much of the community's personality comes to life through small businesses and browsing pedestrians. Many of the restaurants along Main Street are in metal or brick industrial-like buildings. Locals sit outside at the picnic tables of Sidewall Pizza and head to Tandem Creperie and Coffee House on Saturdays – something worth the wait. "People are lined up out the doors, and they take orders from the window of a Volkswagen van that they renovated to help extend the cafe. It's a really cute scene," says Warga. A staple for over 70 years, the train-themed Whistle Stop is a popular café celebrating the railroad industry in its heyday. Local shops fill the rest of the downtown space, from the infused oils and vinegar at Crescent Olive to the eclectic home goods at Urban Hare. Along the main highways are big-name stops, such as Walmart and Ingles.

Live music and holiday markets with TR
Every month, Trailblazer Park off Main Street hosts some events for the community. Among the most popular are a summer concert series, evening movie screenings and the Farmers Market. On Saturdays in May and June, classic rock and country tunes flow through the air as bands take the stage at the outdoor amphitheater. From May through September, the Farmers Market provides local produce, specialty goods and cooking demos. It all flows into December when a holiday parade marches through downtown before the Very Merry Christmas Market sets up to host over 100 vendors.

Classic Americana architecture and contemporary properties
Near the center of downtown, local bicyclists and commuters pass by ranch homes and bungalows, the occasional Craftsman with brightly painted doors and flowerpots adorning the porch. Travelers Rest's growing popularity has made it a choice location for modern tract housing and large custom builds, with contemporary homes popping up on large, manicured yards. Some subdivisions have formed around the center point of the community where there's been space, but much of the modern housing is branching farther into the sprawls of forest and fields surrounding the town. "The average home in Travelers Rest is listed between $400,000 and $500,000, with some exceptions," Warga says. Said exceptions tend to be larger contemporary homes or restored vintage properties on one acre or more, typically between $500,000 and $700,000.

From pocket playgrounds to state parks
Travelers Rest has plenty to do outdoors, but it's best known for being bike-friendly, mainly due to the 22-mile multi-use greenway of Swamp Rabbit Trail that runs along Main Street and connects to Greenville. Pleasant Ridge Park features mountain biking trails, and Gateway Park has a figure eight-pump track and biking trails across different terrains. The latter is also a hub for recreational sports, housing baseball and football fields and basketball and tennis courts alongside a large playground. Within a 50-mile radius are four state parks: Table Rock, Jones Gap, Devils Fork and Paris Mountain. The proximity makes Travelers Rest a perfect hub for those who love the outdoors, especially hiking and kayaking.

Navigating Greenville
Geer Highway and Highway 25 are the two main thoroughfares for the area. Both connect to downtown Greenville, which is 9 miles to the south, and the North Carolina border, which is 20 miles north. The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is only 18 miles away. Though Travelers Rest has no public transportation, it's generally walkable and very bike-friendly due to downtown sidewalks and greenways.
