Hidden oasis at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay
Broad Bay Island is a 2-mile-long hidden oasis in the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach. The community is bound by Broad Bay, Long Creek and an inlet that leads to the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Nearby is an array of home styles, local restaurants and tons of recreation on and around the water. "People usually move here for the front-row seat to deepwater access,” says Jimmy Ray Dunn, a Realtor with Coastal Towne Realty, who lives in the area and also hosts the evening radio programs on the local 97.3 station. “This is the place for water enthusiasts and for a water life."

Out on the water and hiking First Landing State Park
Residents of the island love using their boats to explore Broad Bay’s waterways and venture out to Chesapeake Bay. Fishers will enjoy an abundance of striped bass and bluefish in the nearby waters. “Everyone is always out on the water kayaking, paddle boarding or jet skiing,” says Dunn. Spend a day at Chesapeake Beach, located about 1 mile west, to enjoy the ocean and watch boats pass under Lesner Bridge. Although living on Broad Bay Island gives some of the best deepwater access in the city, residents will want to hike or swim at nearby First Landing State Park. Located about 2 miles east, this nearly 3,000-acre park features bald cypress swamps and a massive forest. The park also offers some of the city’s quietest beaches and plenty of parking at the visitor center.

Easy commuting to Norfolk and the Oceanfront
While plenty of nearby amenities are within walking distance, residents will need a car to access the rest of the city’s perks. Shore Drive can easily get residents to the Oceanfront and Downtown Norfolk, and North Great Neck Road leads to Hilltop Shopping Center.
Important to Know
The island is susceptible to flooding, especially on the northern and western sides. The only exit from the island is on the western side, meaning even small hurricanes or tropical storms may result in an entire evacuation of the area.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
