Named for former 1873 governor, Alexander Robey Shepherd, the neighborhood of Shepherd Park is a diverse, tight-knit community in Northwest D.C. with lots of local pride. Mark Pattison, a resident of the neighborhood for 20 years who serves as Vice President of the Shepherd Park Citizens Association, says that since the 1960s, the neighborhood has gone from being segregated to embracing residents of all backgrounds. “The fellow who first broke the color line used to live the next block over from me, and his widow is still there. She came out for a block party last summer,” Pattison says. “I think when people hear or see what the neighborhood Is like, that we all get along and we all pitch in, there’s a lot less suspicion of the ‘other’ because we’re all here and we’re all in it together.”
Community spirit
The Shepherd Park Citizens Association, or the SPCA, keeps residents connected with regular community events. Some of the most popular events include the Halloween Parade, the Garden Tour, and the annual SCPA Potluck. Many residents also volunteer together at organizations like East Rock Creek Village, an organization that helps senior citizens stay active and engaged in their communities.
The local Juanita E. Thornton Shepherd Park Library, built in 1990, is another community center for residents, students and book lovers alike. The library was named in honor of the library’s founder and hosts events like a LEGO social, Coffee & Conversation circles, and the Shep Tech’s Virtual Reality Experience.

Historic homes and modern condos
The Shepherd Park neighborhood has been around for more than 100 years, and many of the original homes are still standing. Single-family homes in this neighborhood vary in size and style, ranging from midcentury ramblers to larger Tudor estates. “It’s really old-growth housing,” Pattison says. “You’ll rarely find houses next door to each other that look alike.” Although some new condominium developments have sprouted along the eastern edge of the neighborhood at Georgia Avenue, Pattison said the area still feels more suburban than urban. A 3-bedroom condo may sell for between $530,000 and $565,000, while historic 4-bedroom homes generally command a price point of around $1,200,000.

Top-rated DC public schools
Shepherd Elementary School is a prominent local institution, with avid PTO participation from parents and nearby residents. With an A-minus rating from Niche, the school is ranked as the no. 29 best public elementary school in the District of Columbia. Students then attend Deal Middle School, which has an A grade from Niche and is ranked no. 8 of the best public middle schools in DC. The middle school also houses an International Baccalaureate program, which draws students from all eight wards of the District. Jackson-Reed High School also has an A rating and is ranked the no. 5 best high school in DC.

32 miles of trails right from the neighborhood
The 1754-acre Rock Creek Park is adjacent to the Shepherd Park neighborhood, and residents can access the Holly Trail from 16th St at the western edge of the neighborhood. The park includes more than 32 miles of hiking trails as well as historic buildings to explore. The Shepherd Park Community Center next to Shepherd Elementary School features a gym, a multipurpose activity room and a fitness center, and the Shepherd Park Soccer Field includes fields and playgrounds.

Georgia Avenue shopping and dining
Georgia Avenue at the eastern edge of the neighborhood offers shopping and dining options for Shepherd Park residents. A small Target location offers limited home goods and groceries at a convenient location. For larger shopping trips, the Whole Foods at the southeast corner of the neighborhood is a popular destination, or residents can stop at the more modest Giant supermarket one mile north of the neighborhood. Along Georgia Avenue, Ledo Pizza is the “unofficial restaurant of the schoolkids” in Shepherd Park, according to Pattison. “If you like pepperoni pizza, every square inch has a pepperoni on it.” Across the street, the dumplings at Moh Moh Licious are a local staple, particularly for employees of the library next door.

Ride the Red Line
As quiet and suburban as Shepherd Park may feel, its role as part of the greater Washington, DC area means that there are ample options for public transit. The Metro Red Line has two stations within a mile of the neighborhood: One at Silver Spring Metro to the north, and the Takoma station to the southeast. Residents can take the Metro into downtown DC, or drive into the city from Georgia Avenue, but the notorious DC traffic can slow the commute to 45 minutes over the 7 miles. Holy Cross Hospital is located about 3.5 miles north of Shepherd Park, while the MedStar Washington Hospital Center is located about 5 miles to the south.
