Midtown neighborhood known for its family-friendly atmosphere
With a namesake country club at its heart, Pine Valley is an established central Wilmington neighborhood. But the vibe here isn’t one of exclusion. “It’s family-oriented, warm and welcoming,” says Tricia Bursell, a homeowner in the neighborhood, who’s also a Realtor with Blue Coast Realty Corporation. Pine Valley Country Club markets itself as “Wilmington’s family club,” and the neighborhood has its own elementary school and shopping center. The community is also in a key location, allowing residents to get to Wilmington’s most popular attractions quickly. “You’re in a triangle that’s 15 minutes from everything: Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and downtown,” says Bursell, referencing the shape created by three busy thoroughfares surrounding the neighborhood: College Road, Carolina Beach Road and Shipyard Boulevard.

Ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and New Traditional builds
The neighborhood streets form a grid pattern that wraps around Pine Valley Country Club. Single-family homes rest on equally sized lots with spacious front yards and wooded backyards. Properties are modestly landscaped with trimmed grass, a few shaped shrubs and flowering crepe myrtles. Buyers looking in Pine Valley have options when it comes to style. “There are many ranch-style homes, but you can get bungalows and two-story Colonials. It’s eclectic,” Bursell says. Some of the largest homes in the neighborhood are five-bedroom New Traditional homes in the Preston Woods subdivision. All of this variety comes with a wide range in price. While three-bedroom ranch-style homes can go for as low as $350,000 and up to $600,000, some properties overlooking the country club can cost around $1 million. Colonial Revivals typically range between $700,000 and $950,000. “We have the best of the best schools here. It really boosts the prices of homes,” Bursell says. Two-bedroom condos are available for between $170,000 and $225,000, with monthly HOA fees of around $250. While many Wilmington neighborhoods have a risk of flooding, Pine Valley’s is relatively low. However, the risk of hurricanes remains throughout this coastal region.

Students get their morning miles in at Pine Valley Elementary
On the neighborhood's south side, Pine Valley Elementary earns a B-plus rating from Niche. The school’s physical education teacher, Caitlin Hunter, made local news headlines for her Morning Milers program, where students can show up to school 20 minutes early and run laps for prizes. Roland-Grise Middle School receives an A-minus. Students there enjoy a newly renovated building with new desks and an upgraded media center. John T. Hoggard High gets an A and has a competitive athletics program, winning state championships in multiple sports, including football, softball and cross country. Cape Fear Academy, a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade private school, is just outside the neighborhood along College Road. Wilmington Preparatory Academy and Coastal Christian High School are two other nearby private options. The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is about 3 miles away.

Families go for a round at Pine Valley Country Club
Residents can join the private Pine Valley Country Club, known for its family-friendly atmosphere, complete with tee sets for children. The club’s challenging 18-hole golf course features hills, valleys, Hewletts Creek and tall pine trees. After a round, members can cool off in the outdoor swimming pool. No membership is needed at nearby Long Leaf Park, where local sports teams practice on the many ballfields and courts. Bursell says residents often meet up to walk the forested nature trails or take their dogs to the dog park. “They’re super dog friendly. They have doggie bags every 20 feet, and they have a little sectioned-off part for little dogs so that they won’t feel overwhelmed,” says Bursell. The largely untouched, 60-acre Halyburton Park offers a more serene place to get in touch with nature. As home to the New Hanover County Beekeepers Association, this green space features an apiary (an enclosed collection of beehives). Hikers can traverse trails that weave through rolling sandhills and pine forests. The Cross City Trail, a paved multi-use path that connects destinations across Wilmington, loops around the park’s perimeter. On rainy days, families can head to the Cameron Art Museum to see the latest exhibits. Or, they can settle down with a book at the nearby library.

Much to do and see at The Pointe at Barclay
Residents head to the Pine Valley Shopping Center for everyday needs. It’s anchored by Publix, Food Lion, and Ace Hardware. Also, residents can fill their gas tanks, pick up a prescription or stop by the bank. The shopping center offers a mix of fast-food chains, such as Zaxby’s, and local eateries, including Pine Valley Market, a popular pick for lunch with a menu featuring sandwiches, wraps and salads. More options are nearby at The Pointe at Barclay, a new development with local & chain restaurants, boutique fitness studios and salons. “The Pointe has a movie theater and great little restaurants, like Bagels on Pointe,” says Derek Criscitiello, a Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage agent. “The owner moved down from New York, so they do legit bagels,” says Criscitiello, who moved to Wilmington two years ago after visiting the city throughout his childhood. For clothing and home goods, Independence Mall is about 3 miles away.
