Lakeside living near Worcester’s core
Grafton Hill is a neighborhood on the easternmost edge of Worcester. It borders Lake Quinsigamond, which hosts warm weather regattas and offers summertime sunbathing on Lake Park’s sandy beach. Grafton Hill has a variety of housing options, from modest bungalows to Worcester’s signature triple-decker properties, all a short drive from daily amenities. Plus, this residential neighborhood is less than 5 miles from both downtown Worcester and the bedroom community of Shrewsbury, which is just across the water. “It’s one of the most convenient locations in the city,” says Mary Vigliatura Stolarczyk, a broker with Re/Max Vision and a Grafton Hill resident. “We’re so close to downtown that we’re basically a part of it. Interstate 90, Saint Vincent Hospital and other Worcester essential places are nearby. Proximity to Quinsigamond Lake is another huge benefit to this area. It’s one of the city’s major attractions.”
Swimming, boating and fishing at Lake Quinsigamond
The neighborhood's defining feature is its location alongside the 772-acre Lake Quinsigamond, which separates the city of Worcester from the suburban Shrewsbury community. It’s known for its 2,000-meter rowing course, which hosts several yearly high school, college and national competitions. Lake Park, a part of Quinsigamond State Park, is directly in Grafton Hill. “If you live in Worcester, you have been to this park,” Stolarczyk says. At Lake Park, people get active at the tennis courts, sunbathe at the sandy beach in the summer, and gather at the picnic area. “There’s also a firework show here every Fourth of July,” Stolarczyk says.
Perkins Farm, an 80-acre scenic hiking area on Lake Avenue, is also in the neighborhood. On its 1-mile looped trail, hikers and snowshoers can wander beside mature oak trees and Colonial-era stone walls. The Buffone Arena is located on Lake Avenue, offering hockey leagues, figure skating lessons and public skating times every weekday. Less than 4 miles north of Grafton Hill, Green Hill Park provides 480 acres of outdoor fun, including a skatepark and petting zoo.

Grafton Street offers everyday amenities
Grafton Street runs east to west through the neighborhood. It’s lined with restaurants, big-box stores and other businesses. In the Perkins Farm Marketplace shopping center, locals can grocery shop at Stop & Shop, work out at Crunch Fitness or do some discount shopping at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Citi Trends. Residents can grab a quick meal from the fast-food restaurants along this thoroughfare, such as McDonald’s or Dunkin, or casual sit-down spots including Golden Wok, a Chinese eatery. Other nationally known retailers like Target, Aldi and TJ Maxx are less than 6 miles north in the Lincoln Plaza shopping center along Lincoln Street. In case of emergency, the world-renowned UMass Memorial Medical Center is just north of Grafton Hill.

Modest cottages and triple-deckers
Modest cottages are next to triple-deckers in Grafton Hill, and most properties sit on small lots. Some lack yards, sitting right up against the neighborhood’s uneven, cracked sidewalks. Others feature lawns with patchy grass and mature oak trees. “Investors are really into the three-family properties right now,” says Stolarczyk. “But everything here sells consistently quickly because of the location.” Investors looking to purchase a multifamily property can find one for between $500,000 and $800,000. Quaint Cape Cods, raised ranch-style homes and bungalows for single families tend to go for between $330,000 and $700,000, depending on the size, age and condition of the property. There are also many duplexes in the neighborhood that run in the $400,000 to $550,000 range.
