North Albany-Shaker Park
Home on the Hudson
Industrial properties take up most of the eastern part of this mixed-use neighborhood, while single-family homes populate the west side. While many row houses were built prior to 1925, there are pockets of newer townhouses with driveways and multi-car garages. The historic properties come with pros and cons. Spaciousness is an advantage of being built when homes were expected to house large families. Prospective homebuyers will find six-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot homes listed for around $200,000. However, many of these homes require repairs to be move-in ready. Newer three-bedroom townhouses built in 2018 require far less work but are not as readily available and prices begin around $375,000. Lots are usually less than 5,000 square feet and sometimes feature small lawns or double porches that add to outdoor living space.Eating in North Albany
Residents can shop for groceries and household necessities at the Family Dollar on Broadway or can make the 3.5-mile drive to Honest Weight Food Co-op, a community-owned grocery store specializing in fresh, locally sourced produce. Although downtown Albany is just under 2 miles away, locals do not need to leave the neighborhood for a night out. Good Religion, the first Caribbean soul food buffet in Albany, is located directly in the neighborhood. Il Faro is another Shaker Park staple, a family-owned Italian restaurant known as a spot for celebrations.Capital District entertainment
North Albany-Shaker Park is just 3 miles from Washington Park, where the annual Albany Tulip Festival is held every summer. The Tulip Festival features live music, a vendor fair and the chance for locals to view over 140,000 tulips in bloom. Downtown Albany is also an events hub of the community. “MVP Arena is pretty close,” Wright says. “And there are concerts and comedy shows at The Egg all the time.”Schooling in Shaker Park
North Albany-Shaker Park is one of the few neighborhoods in Albany where elementary students and their families can choose which school to attend. Arbor Hill Elementary, which earns a C from Niche, is the nearest, located in neighboring Arbor Hill. North Albany Academy Middle School, also a C, is located directly in Shaker Park and serves as the neighborhood’s community center. All city schools eventually feed into Albany High School, which scores a B and is rated the No. 7 magnet school in all of New York. Albany High offers four specialized academies, so students can pursue multiple educational paths.Hacket Park and Sacred Heart
Neighbors in North Albany-Shaker Park head to Hackett Park to spend time outside. This pocket of green space provides residents with basketball courts, playgrounds and open fields to enjoy without having to leave the community boundaries. For a more meditative nature experience, Sacred Heart Park sits across the street from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a historic house of worship that has stood in Albany since 1880.Getting around the Capital District
Capital District Transit Authority buses are a frequent sight throughout North Albany-Shaker Park. “Bus lines run up and down Pearl Street,” Wright says. “Not that anybody really uses it. We’re a car community – always have been.” Residents have easy access to Interstate 90, connecting them with Albany International Airport 7 miles west, and to Interstate 787, which provides access to Troy just 7 miles north.
