Satisfy any craving at Midtown restaurants
Midtown residents have easy access to some of the most popular shopping destinations in the city, including Midtown Mall. This large indoor shopping center has stores like Nordstrom Rack, REI and Guitar Center. Other stores in the neighborhood include Walmart, Lowe’s and Barnes & Noble. Residents have several grocery options, including Carrs, Natural Pantry and New Sagaya Midtown Market, a local grocery store with an emphasis on Asian produce. Fromagio’s Artisan Cheese on Arctic Boulevard is a small local store offering various cheeses and other gourmet products. Midtown is also a popular location for dining out, with multiple chains and local restaurants. Residents enjoy the creative pizzas and craft beer at Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria, which has cozy outdoor fire pits. Bear Paw Bar & Grill is another local spot serving steaks, burgers and other American fare in a rustic setting. Multi- and single-family homes in the heart of Anchorage
Midtown has limited but varied housing for buyers to choose from. Many of the homes available in the neighborhood are condos and townhouses. “They are low maintenance, and you don’t have to worry about exterior maintenance. It’s all taken care of by the homeowners association,” Tolbert says. Buyers interested in condos, such as Mt. Vernon Commons, may have to pay monthly HOA fees of up to $478. Most condos in the neighborhood cost between $200,000 and $300,000. Single-family homes include modest cottages and ranch-style houses built close together on city streets dotted sparingly with trees. These houses typically cost between $300,000 and $400,000.

Urban parks offer a retreat from city life
Despite its urban nature, Midtown offers some outdoor recreation for residents. Cuddy Family Midtown Park is a large urban park with several activities, including walking trails, a pond and a playground. This green space is a popular spot for locals to race remote-controlled sailboats on the lake or fly kites on the open grassy areas. Just across Seward Highway, Helen Louise McDowell Sanctuary is a 14-acre natural area with a mile-long boardwalk meandering through forested wetlands. Visitors can access the boardwalk from Grape Place or Eau Claire Place and enjoy a walk through nature in the middle of the city.

Easy commuting through central Anchorage
Midtown’s central location makes it easy for residents to get around Anchorage. Seward Highway is immediately east of the neighborhood and gives residents a north-to-south route through the city. Downtown Anchorage is just 2.7 miles north along A Street, while Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is about 3.5 miles west. Residents also have easy access to public transportation, with four bus routes passing through the neighborhood. These routes allow locals to get downtown, to Northeast Anchorage or south to the popular shopping at Dimond Center.
Unique academic offerings at Midtown schools
Students in Midtown will likely attend Rogers Park Elementary School, rated an A by Niche; Romig Middle School, rated a B-minus; and West High School, rated an A-minus. West High serves approximately 1,800 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 22-to-1. The school offers several academic programs, including a medical academy and Spanish and Russian immersion programs. Students can also participate in the Air Force JROTC at the school.
Higher-than-average crime in the community
Homebuyers should be aware that Midtown has a CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10 compared to the national average of 4. The neighborhood receives particularly high scores for larceny and burglary. Violent crimes like homicide and assault are slightly above the U.S. average crime score.
