South Fork offers quiet mountain living outside of Anchorage
If you want your neighborhood streets to feel like you’re running the Iditarod, South Fork might be the spot for you. This mountainous neighborhood is full of residents who enjoy living beneath the towering peaks. “There’s a lot that comes with the mountains. There are babbling creeks, and you get extended views of beautiful sunrises and sunsets,” says local Realtor Tyler Hughes with Alaska Realty and Investments. “You’re likely to see moose, bears, lynx and coyotes. It’s beautiful, and it’s not too far a drive from the central core of Anchorage.” Located just 18 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage, residents of South Fork can feel like they’ve escaped into the wilderness, all while being just a short drive from civilization.
Homes are private, wooded and full of character
South Fork is home to many houses that locals describe as mountain houses. Hughes says you can find a mix of housing styles. “It’s pretty eclectic. There aren’t cookie-cutter homes. Over the decades, there have been some homesteads, and then you also have some nice custom homes,” he says. Many of the houses in the area are log cabins. Most houses have plenty of land around them and are not close together. The streets in the neighborhood are hilly and winding, and mature trees and shrubs shield homes from view from the road. Houses in South Fork typically cost between $450,000 and $600,000. Newer custom homes will likely cost more than $600,000.
Local schools receive high ratings on Niche
Students in South Fork might attend Homestead Elementary School, rated a B-plus by Niche, and Gruening Middle School, which gets an A-minus overall rating, before moving on to Eagle River High School. Eagle River High is rated an A-minus and one of the state’s top public high schools. The school offers an engineering academy where students can explore astronautics and aerodynamics. The school’s campus also has a popular nine-hole disc golf course.
Recreation is abundant, from community parks to glacial lakes
You’ll have plenty of options for outdoor recreation in South Fork. Head to Spirit Park on Elkhorn Circle to spend time with friends or family. This small neighborhood park has a basketball court, several play structures and a picnic shelter. If you’re in the mood for some adventure, you can choose from several hiking trails accessible within the neighborhood. The Upper South Fork Eagle River Trailhead is the starting point for a 4.8-mile trail that leads to two glacial lakes. Much of the trail is through open alpine meadows with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. Once you reach Eagle Lake and Symphony Lake, you can take some time to explore the area or cast a line for trout and grayling. Another popular hike is the short trek to South Fork Falls. This trail is only a half-mile and leads to magnificent waterfalls on the south fork of the Eagle River.
Eagle River is the hub for shopping and dining
South Fork is a residential neighborhood, but if you drive into nearby Eagle River, you’ll find a commercial center with plenty of local shops and restaurants and some chain and big-box stores. You can grab a bite to eat at Pizza Man, a popular casual restaurant serving pizza, pasta and subs. Locals enjoy this cozy local eatery's extensive craft beer menu and salad bar. You can shop for groceries at Carrs just up the street and pick up any other household items at Walmart on Eagle River Road.
Getting around on Glenn Highway

Residents of South Fork will be just 18 miles from downtown Anchorage and 25 miles from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Glenn Highway gives you a straight shot into the city whenever you need to make the drive.
