The quiet city of Anderson, South Carolina sits in northwest South Carolina, part of the Upstate region, about 16 miles northeast of the Savannah River and Georgia state line. Home to nearly 76,000 residents, Anderson exhibits a small-town feel, earning it the nickname of the “Friendliest City in South Carolina.” It was also one of the first cities in the southeast to adopt the use of electricity thanks to an early hydroelectric plant installed on the Rocky River. Today, Anderson is a growing yet close-knit community. A median home sale price of $230,500 is up 24 percent over the same period in 2020, on par with many other cities in the Southeastern United States.
Downtown Anderson displays the idyllic look of small-town America, with tree-lined streets and long-standing brick buildings that now house local restaurants, including classic diners, taco spots, burger restaurants, and a local brewery. Carolina Wren Park sits in the heart of downtown and features a small amphitheater and a nightly light show for residents to enjoy. There are several other parks, including Toxaway Park and Galloway Park, which is split by Whitner Creek and provides plenty of multi-use trails to enjoy. Farther north along Main Street sits Anderson Mall, complete with plenty of name-brand retailers and more recognizable dining options as well.
The Anderson School District oversees the operation of 21 schools that serve 13,000 students. There are also two charter schools situated within the city. Anderson Five Charter Schools and McCants Middle School both rank high in the district, as does Concord Elementary School. Home to Anderson University, a private university that offers 59 major degree programs and is one of the fastest growing private universities in the country, Anderson provides education options for every student in the city.
Commuting in Anderson
Anderson is very much a car-dependent city, and most residents experience a commute time of around 18 minutes. Interstate 85 is just north of the city and ferries residents to Greenville, Spartanburg, or Athens, Georgia with relative ease. While Downtown Anderson is relatively walkable, as is the Anderson Campus, the accessibility quickly falls away toward the suburbs, so owning a car is a must here.
