Tennis at Glebe Road Park or environmental education at Gulf Branch Nature Center
Many locals are members of the nearby Washington Golf and Country Club, a 2-mile drive from home on North Glebe Road. Established in 1894, it’s the oldest private golf club in Virginia, and it’s where members can gather for drinks, play indoor or outdoor tennis, swim in the pool or tee off in this historic “club of the Presidents,” as its famous former members include presidents Calvin Coolidge, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and William Howard Taft. The 4-acre green space of Glebe Road Park is within Old Glebe and is within walking distance from even the farthest home in the neighborhood. Glebe Road Park has infrastructure from a walking path to basketball and tennis courts, with pickleball nets available. This large park also has the Gulf Branch Nature Center, with local wildlife exhibits and interactive informational displays. Locals with a green thumb can volunteer with the nature center for their invasive species branch removal project, organized on the second Saturday of each month, to learn about native plants while cleaning up invasive wildlife. The whole family can take a day trip to visit the nature center’s owl or tortoise exhibits right from home. History buffs can also stroll to Fort Ethan Allen Park, a green space built around what was once a Civil War-era military fort. Stroll around the grounds and see earthworks that have eroded somewhat but have been visible for over a century. The park has a walking tour of the old fortress’ perimeter and occasionally hosts reenactments of day-to-day life for the Union Army soldiers who once stood here.Upscale homes with great landscaping opportunities
The housing stock of Old Glebe is priced higher than the D.C. metro average, with single-family homes ranging from $1.25 million to $4 million. The houses here are mainly built within the last fifteen years, with midcentury-era builds spread far and few between. “Some houses have indoor elevators and multiple car garages,” says Ronald Cathell, a local Realtor with Keller Williams. There are primarily Contemporary-style custom homes and colonials typically sized from 2,000 square feet and four beds at the smallest, stretching up to 10,000 square feet and seven beds at the most expensive. There is ample landscaping opportunity for residents to customize their spacious lawns with blooming flower gardens, intricate shrubbery and manicured grass. “This creates an atmosphere of sophistication and elegance that these home buyers are really looking for,” adds Cathell.Arlington Public Schools are highly rated, with Chesterbrook Montessori School close to home
Nearby schools include Jamestown Elementary and Williamsburg Middle, both rated an A on Niche, and Yorktown High, boasting an A-plus rating. Yorktown High is also lauded on Niche as the No. 12 ranked best public high school in the state, with Advanced Placement enrollment reaching half the student body. The Chesterbrook Montessori School is a private option and the only school within Old Glebe.Chesterbrook Shopping Center in McLean, or groceries in all directions in Arlington
Regarding retail, there are no commercial businesses within Old Glebe. Residents here are minutes away from northern Virginia’s grocery-dense shopping areas. Close says, “You can go to McLean in three minutes and go to the Chesterbrook shopping center. You can go to Harrison Street, for Harris Teeter or Safeway, or Whole Foods in Clarendon. You can almost go in an arc from north to east, west or south to find one or two shopping centers that fit what you’re looking for.” Chesterbrook Shopping Center is less than 2 miles west along Chesterbrook Road, and residents can get a quick breakfast at Call Your Mother Lil’ Deli, a DMV regional chain serving bagel sandwiches and coffee.
GW Parkway is a quick commute to the District, with public buses and bike lanes along Military Road
Old Glebe is highly walkable to residents seeking outdoor parks, and bike lanes are accessible along North Old Glebe Road and Military Road. Still, commuters may need a car to drive to work or to take trips to retail options in McLean or Arlington. George Washington Memorial Parkway, locally called “GW Parkway,” is the primary highway access to the nation’s capital. From this neighborhood, drivers can admire the dogwood trees and the churning Potomac River on this 8-mile trip to downtown D.C. The 53B route of the Arlington Transportation bus runs along North Glebe Road and Military Road for public access to stores along Langston Boulevard to the south.
