Why Live in Sand Hills

Sand Hills is a small pocket of central Augusta with deep roots in the city's history. Portions of the neighborhood fall within a designated National Historic District, and its development was closely tied to nearby Summerville, where wealthy Augustans and Northern visitors once spent their winters. The domestic workers and skilled artisans who helped run those estates lived in Sand Hills. The neighborhood also has a strong connection to the Masters Tournament. Before 1983, every player at Augusta National used a local caddie, and many came from Sand Hills. That legacy is preserved at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History in the nearby Laney Walker neighborhood. Today, Sand Hills is in the middle of a transformation. Sand Hills Urban Development, a local nonprofit, is leading redevelopment efforts that include new housing and the planned revitalization of the former Weed School site on Mount Auburn Street into a mixed-use development. The neighborhood is mostly residential, but shopping and dining options like Surrey Center and the restaurants along Summerville are nearby. Outdoor spaces include Sand Hills Community Center and Big Oak Park, which has renovations in the pipeline. From Sand Hills, the Calhoun Expressway and Washington Road provide access across the city, and Augusta Transit buses serve the area.
