A flowering Austin neighborhood
Austin’s Rosewood neighborhood was settled by Europeans in the late 1800s before the community, and East Austin as a whole, was rezoned as a neighborhood for African-Americans during the Jim Crow era. Things have changed a lot since then, and since the early 21st century, Rosewood has become a desirable community for buyers of all backgrounds seeking easy access to Downtown Austin, the University of Texas at Austin, the numerous restaurants of 6th Street and the sleek, modern homes which continue to enter the neighborhood. “It’s a very friendly and constantly growing community,” says Luis Padilla, Site Supervisor at the Dolores Duffie Recreation Center. “It’s a neighborhood where you see construction and new businesses popping up and older facilities and sites getting renovations.”
Rosewood, nestled in Austin, exudes a vibrant atmosphere and historic charm.

I was born and raised here since 1982 let’s just say I know a lot about every part of Austin every park, alleys, road, street, apartments and houses that exist from 1982 to today. There have been many phases and faces of this neighborhood growing up in Austin from the years of 1982 to 2001 were probably the best in my opinion because if I’m not mistaken it is the people that make the neighborhood doesn’t it? Either way if you grew up in those times in Austin well you were lucky, Austin has always been a city of love and life we took care of each other it never mattered what part of Austin you grew up in we never divided our city it was always one of unity and respect. Even if you didn’t belong in that neighborhood but you were there visiting a friend if your could smell the aromas of good cooking in the air and it was a friends house you were welcome to come in with open arms, to eat some good food and make great memories. It never mattered to me what part of Austin I was in I always knew someone on just about every street and our parents took care of other kids with out complaint or hesitation. As kids we were encouraged a lot to do door to door sales as I said before and I will say it again we never hesitated to do as we were told cause it was always fun times for us. You could be a 17 yr old out at 2 am nobody bothered you unless you wanted to be bothered we always had the best parties in Austin. Now that I am 43 I’ve watched Austin shape and shift into what it is today although I can say I would never walk the streets at night at 2 am like I use to I can tell you this much I still feel a sense of safety where ever I go because in the end it’s what we all strive for I hope, a safe neighborhood with good people and a loving home. Most of my friends lived in this area I grew up in up in the southwest area of Austin Brodie lane and convict hill but to me it’s all still the same cause some of us still live in the same houses to this day. Peace and Love Michelle P.

I would live here again because the people are friendly. Austin is an eco-friendly city that is big and small at the same time.

Most of the jobs in the area may be for students. Adults usually work in companies outside of the area.
