Beaufort Home Trends

Situated on the coastal Sea Island of Port Royal, Beaufort encompasses some of the most historic sites and scenic destinations on the coast of South Carolina. Once a bustling port town, Beaufort is now considered one of the “best small Southern towns” by Southern Living. With a prominent military presence at Parris Island and a thriving tourism scene, it's no wonder Beaufort is loved by residents and visitors alike. Impressive antebellum mansions and a charming downtown district all contribute to make the city feel unique, but the close-knit community further solidifies the city's identity. A growing suburban contingency on the west side of the city and across the river in Red Oak means there is more opportunity for new construction, but Beaufort is relatively limited by its geography. A median home sale price of $268,000 indicated a 60% increase from the same period in 2020, but the rental market isn't as competitive as similar coastal locales like Charleston.

Beaufort Attractions

Downtown Beaufort is bursting with historic character. Incredible homes line the walkable streets shaded by towering oaks and Spanish moss. Fine dining restaurants, local taverns, casual seafood spots, and more are all within a few minutes' walk of one another. Within the historic district, places like the Thomas Hepworth House, Secession House, Robert Smalls House, and more display the architecture of the 1800s and provide period-correct exhibits and staging to showcase the way of life in Beaufort centuries ago. Head to Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park to enjoy incredible views of the Beaufort River and the surrounding marinas. Head east along Highway 21 to reach Hunting Island State Park and enjoy the beaches, only a 30-minute drive away.

Beaufort Schools

The Beaufort County School District encompasses over 30 schools that cater to grades K-12, and Bridges Preparatory School and the Lowcountry Montessori School are two standout charter schools on the island. The University of South Carolina has a campus in Beaufort, just a 35-minute drive west of the city.

Commuting in Beaufort

Beaufort has an average commute time of 15 minutes, thanks in part to the city's diminutive size. Getting around the downtown area is easily done on foot or by bike, but because of the nature of the island and the accessory communities across the river, a car is a must have. Venturing out to Hunting Island can mean encountering more traffic as beachgoers head to the coast, but overall Beaufort is far from a congested city.
