Van Cortlandt Village is an urban residential neighborhood located in the Bronx with plenty of housing options. Food Dynasty Supermarket serves as the local grocery store, but residents can access many others in the nearby Kingsbridge neighborhood along Broadway. At Riverdale Crossing, also along Broadway, there’s a BJ’s Wholesale Club, fast food chains and various storefronts like Petco. Given the area’s residential makeup, there aren’t many businesses directly in the neighborhood, but local shops can be found along Broadway between 239th Street and 230th Street. Each year on the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States, June 19th, 1865, The Van Cortlandt Park Alliance and community hold a celebration honoring enslaved Africans who lived and died in the area from the late 17th century to the early 19th century. The procession and ceremonies take place in an area known as Enslaved African Burial Ground, which is also the site of a former plantation.
