“Bushwick has always been known as an arts hub and the deeper out you get, the more genuine artists you find. It’s where a lot of true creatives live,” says Matt Rosenblum, who, with Amy Wong, has been producing live comedy shows at the Tiny Cupboard since 2019. Other venues like Elsewhere, House of Yes, and Nowadays attract musicians, DJs, and performers to their sprawling warehouse spaces. Dining offerings are expansive, and it’s easy to find top-notch tacos at El Regalo de Juquila or thin crust pizza at Roberta’s. Regulars flock to neighborhood institutions like Circo’s Pastry Shop, which has been baking authentic Italian pastries since 1945, and Tina’s Place, a classic diner for eggs and pancakes, which has been around for over 80 years. The neighborhood is also home to many breweries, including Kings County Brewers Collective. Markets and grocery stores, including City Fresh Market, line Knickerbocker Avenue.

Arts events, including the Bushwick Collective Block Party
Live music and street artists take over the neighborhood for the Bushwick Collective Block Party in June. In previous years, dozens of new murals have been unveiled alongside the event. In October, the Bushwick Film Festival includes five days of film screenings.

Prewar rowhouses and low-rise condo buildings
“Bushwick was always known for its brownstones, townhouses, and now we’re seeing more condo developments,” says Malkoukian. Height restrictions mean that most structures are only four stories, and do not have elevators. A one-bedroom condo in a modern building with a roof deck costs between $500,000 to $700,000. Single-family houses are rare, and rowhouses are often split into duplexes. A two-family duplex in a prewar brick building runs between $1.1 million and $2.2 million. A five-bedroom townhouse with parking and a backyard costs around $1.5 million. Some mid-rise buildings, like Denizen Bushwick, are popping up on the neighborhood’s edge, offering mostly rentals.

Many outdoor spaces, including Maria Hernandez Park
Bushwick has 14 parks and playgrounds, with Maria Hernandez Park offering almost seven acres of space. The park’s large snaking path leads to basketball courts, playgrounds and dog runs. Old-growth trees provide shade for wooden benches. Bushwick is bordered by an area of cemeteries, including Most Holy Trinity Cemetery and the Evergreens Cemetery, which offers a quiet barrier to the east and provides residents a place to walk.

Multiple subway lines at Broadway Junction, plus buses
The J train runs along Broadway, and the M train bisects the neighborhood along Myrtle Avenue. A subway hub at Broadway Junction additionally offers access to the A and C and L trains. Nine bus routes run through the neighborhood.

A top-rated middle and high school
PS 116 Elizabeth L. Farrell Elementary School serves pre-K through fifth grade and earns a C rating from Niche. Intermediate School 162 The Willoughby School incorporates mental and physical activities into its curriculum for students in grades six through eight. All City Leadership Secondary School is an outstanding middle and high school focusing on college preparedness that earns an A rating from Niche and is ranked in the top 1% of all city schools by the NYC Department of Education.
