Grider is made up of a mix of doubles and singles built between 1900 and 1920. These homes are what locals call “Old Style,” and take inspiration from Cape Cod architecture with features like pitched roofs, dormer windows and covered porches. The Grider area has several small parks, such as Glenny Park off Fillmore Avenue, which has several softball diamonds, and Glenwood/New Box Park on Box Avenue, which offers a playground and basketball court. At the center of the neighborhood, Delavan Grider Community Center on Delavan Avenue offers recreation and quiet meeting spaces, as well as an after-school program, senior programs, free counseling and community events. “The community center has so many community events and workshops there like summer youth programs, a food pantry, and different activities. I’ve actually hosted activities there for first-time home buyers on how to buy a home, how to go about home repair, things like that,” Ayat Nieves says.

The Glenwood/New Box Park holds events like a Children’s Garden Festival in the spring, and there is always something going on at the Delavan Grider Community Center. The center holds bigger events, too, like the Fall Funk Fest, which features live music, dancing and food. The cost of tickets raises funds for the center to keep playing such an active role in the community. Every Friday from late June through the fall, residents gather at the Devalan-Grider Farmers Market for fresh produce and locally-made goods.
