Post-war co-op that is part of a large affordable housing community
This part of Flushing, including 31-31 138th Street, is considered Mitchell-Linden, populated with 38 co-op complexes built in the 1950s as part of an affordable housing initiative for returning war veterans. The six-story, red-brick building from 1953 is one of five sections in Linden Towers; this particular section also includes 138-25 31st Drive. The building remains an affordable option for middle-income families seeking a starter home in this residential pocket, where tree-lined streets with sidewalks and manicured lawns offer a more relaxed vibe than downtown Flushing to the south.
Larger-than-average apartments provide a good value
Some of the 133 units are in poor shape and would need extensive renovations. Others are move-in ready, but dated. One- and two-bedrooms are the most common here, with larger-than-average kitchens. One-bedrooms range between 750 and 900 square feet, making them big enough for a formal dining room, eat-in-kitchen, walk-in closets and bedrooms that can fit king-sized beds. Two-bedrooms offer up to 1,100 square feet and some have two bathrooms. Otherwise, apartments feature window air conditioners, parquet floors and bathrooms with windows in the shower area. Late 2024 listings advertise a move-in ready one-bedroom for almost $300,000 and an updated two-bedroom for $420,000.
Limited amenities are in keeping with the price point
Amenities are basic, but there are elevators, plus a simple gym, basement laundry room, live-in super and (waitlisted) secure parking lot. Speaking of security, the property is equipped with cameras. Cats are allowed. Monthly charges are on the low end and tend to run less than $1,000 a month.
Quiet enclave within walking distance of businesses
Though the Mitchell-Linden area is mostly residential, Union Street is just a block away for H Mart, a popular Asian market chain, and a variety of Asian restaurants. A larger selection of Asian eateries resides in downtown Flushing. Playgrounds, ball fields, schools and the Queens Public Library at Mitchell-Linden are all within walking distance.
Buses are plentiful but cars can be more convenient
Local and express buses are the best way to get around by public transportation since the nearest 7 train, the main line serving Flushing, is about a 20-minute walk down to the Main Street station. Express trains reach Grand Central in about 30 minutes. The 7 train is near the Long Island Rail Road, which takes riders to Penn Station in 20 minutes. Owning a car is helpful and the Whitestone Expressway is a few blocks away. LaGuardia Airport is a mere 4 miles away, taking about 20 minutes by car (without traffic), versus more than an hour by public transportation.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
