Prewar elegance in the heart of Lenox Hill

In a residential area of mid-rise buildings on the Upper East Side, 229 E.79th St. is in the middle of the block with a green canopy stretching to the end of the sidewalk. Carved limestone columns amid red bricks are the hallmarks of the building. Built in 1930, the prewar cooperative stands 16 stories tall with 96 units. The beveled glass entry door is highlighted by two neatly trimmed boxwood trees in ornate containers. A one-story limestone base distinctively frames a second story limestone decorative window. They evoke historical elegance. “You feel welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby,” says Carol Friedman, associate broker at Nest Seekers International who has done business in the building. “The location is great, near transportation, shopping and a short walk to Central Park.”

Pet friendly building with a sun deck

The building has full-time door attendants and a live-in superintendent, and Friedman says the staff is helpful, knowledgeable, efficient and polite. The lobby was recently renovated. The basement features a storage room and a bicycle room. The building is pet friendly with the co-op board’s approval. Smack dab in busy Manhattan, the building offers an urban oasis in the form of a landscaped roof deck with a pergola overhang for tenants to relax and lounge. While most of the units have washer and dryers, there is also a common laundry room, Friedman notes. The management company is very professional and always on top of everything, Friedman says.

Interiors feature soaring ceilings and arched doorways

Units vary in price based on size and condition. A one-bedroom 900-square-foot unit was listed at $799,000 in December 2024, while a 2,220-square-foot unit with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms was listed at $3.41 million. Friedman represents the latter listing; she says the layout and flow of the residence were what her client liked most about living there. “The living room has grand proportions, is perfect for entertaining, reading and relaxing and easily fits a piano,” Friedman says. “There is an amazing amount of closet and storage space and the bedrooms are separated and not all next to each other.” Her client’s residence is unique as it is a combination of two apartments. But all the units in the building have their own distinct style. "Each apartment has an entry foyer and a windowed eat-in kitchen or a dining room, Friedman says, adding there are units with one bedroom, two bedrooms and three bedrooms on each floor. There are only six apartments per floor. Interior architectural highlights are the lofty ceilings and spacious rooms, Friedman notes. Arched doorways and moldings add to the elegance of the interior décor.

Lenox Hill nabe notes

Lenox Hill is a diverse neighborhood known for its?great restaurants, shopping, museums and parks.? It also has become a luxury real estate destination, with properties ranging from sleek condominium towers to elegant prewar and Beaux Arts mansions, Friedman says. This convenient neighborhood has four gyms within two blocks of the building, she adds. Also nearby is Sable’s Smoked Fish at 1330 Third Ave., known for its breakfast, caviar and smoked salmon. There’s also Pil Pil, a Spanish restaurant on 78th Street and Second Avenue known for its tapas. The 6 train at 77th Street and Lexington Ave. takes riders uptown and downtown on the east side. The Q, N and R subway lines on the Second Avenue line stop on 72nd Street and 86th Street. The M15 stops at Second Ave and 78th Street heading downtown on Second Avenue to the Financial District. The building is within walking distance of Central Park and Fifth Avenue’s Museum Mile, home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim, among others. It’s also close to Lenox Hill Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
