A 1957 co-op within a residential West Bronx neighborhood
Living at 5235 Post Road may mean a front-row seat to Friday-night football games or midweek soccer matches — the mid-century co-op abuts Bertino Memorial Field at Riverdale Country School, one of Fieldston’s three ultra-elite private schools. The campus, accessible from Fieldston Road, is perched above Post Road, where the co-op is nestled beside two stone retaining walls. This brick-clad, seven-story building is atypical for the neighborhood. Within New York City, Fieldston is known as a wealthy enclave with landmarked homes and impressive mansions lining its winding, suburban-like streets. However, the neighborhood’s northeastern corridor, including 5235 Post Road, has its own character, where more densely packed apartments and co-ops mingle with relatively modest townhouses and single-family homes. Commerce is quite limited in the area, but one block from the co-op, residents can access over 1,000 acres of nature at Van Cortlandt Park.
Buyers should assess condition, finishes and views on a case-by-case basis
With only 68 units total, 5235 Post Road has a boutique feel. One-bedrooms are the most readily available, while studios and two-bedrooms, though present, rarely hit the market. Some units still include retro finishes, especially in the bathrooms which were originally outfitted with pedestal sinks and either powder blue or baby pink tiles. Remodels often feature sleek white tiles, walk-in showers and vanities with more practical storage. While some kitchens have been updated, their walled-off layouts typically remain. One nice perk for owners is that most apartments have ample storage, including walk-in closets, and entries are often large enough to accommodate a four-person dining set. Also, seven units (one per floor) have a balcony. It’s worth noting that west- and north-facing units on lower levels look directly at the surrounding retaining walls, significantly limiting natural light. Some higher units, however, may contend with bright stadium lights due to the athletic field next door.
Studios at 5235 Post Road start around 370 square feet, over 100 square feet smaller than the neighborhood average, with prices hovering between $125,000 and $150,000. One-bedroom apartments, 700 to 900 square feet in size, typically cost between $168,000 and $189,000, while two-bedrooms, measuring 1,000 to 1,400 square feet, range from $280,000 to $340,000.
Amenities include a laundry room and on-site parking
Upon their arrival, residents pass two landscaped planters and ascend a set of stairs before reaching the co-op’s glass-clad entrance. Inside, the double-height lobby is filled with natural light and has a simple design featuring picture frame moldings, terrazzo floors and marble accents. There’s no doorman or seating area, but residents can pick up their mail and packages or call on the building’s live-in super for additional help. An elevator connects to the basement, where residents can access bike storage and a laundry room that’s wrapped in a Mediterranean-themed mural. Plus, residents with cars may join a waitlist to lease an outdoor parking spot in the gated lot adjacent to the building.
Prestigious private schools and abundant green space
While residents can see Riverdale Country School’s athletic facilities in plain sight, it’s the institution’s academics that set it apart. According to Niche, the private K-12 school is ranked the best private school in the country. Plus, two other private schools in the neighborhood, Horace Mann and Ethical Culture Fieldston School, are ranked within the state’s top 10 private schools. Manhattan University is also located near Fieldston’s southern border. Aside from these prestigious academic institutions, the neighborhood is mostly residential. A few highly-rated eateries, such as The Last Stop and Jake’s Steakhouse, can be found along Broadway, which separates the neighborhood from the park. Otherwise, residents can head north to Riverdale and Mosholu avenues for grocery stores, bars and restaurants. For many residents, Van Cortlandt Park is the main attraction. The green space has 1,146 acres of forested land and recreational activities, including hiking trails and athletic fields that are within a short walking distance of the co-op. Farther into the park, there are horse stables, an 18th-century museum that sits on the National Register of Historic Places and the country’s oldest public golf course.
Highways are nearby, while train stations are slightly farther
Those with cars can fuel-up at a gas station along Broadway or quickly access the Henry Hudson Parkway, which connects to several other highways. Residents who rely on public transit have limited options, including a single bus route within the Bronx and several others that leave the city for Westchester County to the north. Located 0.7 miles from the co-op, the Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street subway station is the northernmost stop along the 1 train. A ride to Midtown Manhattan’s Columbus Circle takes roughly 40 minutes. In Riverdale, residents can travel along the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
