A seven-story co-op building three blocks from downtown Flushing

An 80-unit co-op building in the heart of Flushing, The Harwyn dates to 1958 and features an unassuming red-brick exterior affixed with rows of fire escapes and scant additional ornament. Raised garden beds planted with trees and shrubs are the main distinguishing element, lining the sidewalk and flanking the recessed entrance, thus providing residents on the lower floors with a view of nature outside their windows. The seven-story structure features a canopied entryway with glass double doors that lead to a buzzer-secured vestibule, adding a layer of protection, while a pair of security cameras record comings and goings. The no-frills lobby is minimally decorated with a mirrored wall and a potted plant as well as black-and-white flooring. An elevator is also in the space, set against a marble-patterned wall. The main draw at The Harwyn is its prime location blocks from New York City's largest Chinatown, a bustling enclave that draws immigrants from across Asia with its ample amenities, including large-scale commercial developments, glitzy residential buildings and access to public transit.

Units range in price from $187,000 to $495,000

The Harwyn features a mix of studios to two-bedroom units, with a few combinations available. Hardwood floors are typical within the dwellings, along with built-in HVAC units. Otherwise, residences have little commonality, with some featuring updated bathrooms and kitchen appliances and others that could benefit from a renovation. The interiors largely lack crown molding and other decorative elements, but some come with built-in shelving. Some units also come with private terraces. Pricing details are scarce, but homes generally range between $187,000 and $495,000. Monthly maintenance fees include gas, heat and hot water but not electricity. A one-bedroom listed for $360,000 carries a monthly maintenance fee of $740. Policy-wise, subletting is permitted after two years of owner occupancy.

Perks include a shared laundry room and elevator

Amenities are limited at The Harwyn, but the building does have an elevator, making it suitable for residents with mobility issues. There's also a live-in super, who ensures that maintenance needs are promptly addressed. A shared laundry room in the basement features coin-operated washers and dryers, a change machine and metal laundry carts. The entrance to the property is secured with cameras and a keyed front door, which leads to a vestibule and buzzer intercom system. While no parking for residents is available on site, a garage is two blocks away. The property also doesn’t contain a fitness center, but the surrounding blocks include the Flushing YMCA and KGym Fitness.

New York’s largest Chinatown provides a vibrant setting

The vibrant Flushing neighborhood, the biggest Chinatown in New York, is home to a dizzying array of dining destinations and storefronts catering to the large immigrant community. The Harwyn is on a residential block just outside Flushing's bustling commercial center, close enough to have easy access to retail and transit but far enough removed to allow for relative peace. The nearest grocery store is the H Mart, two blocks away, which carries Asian-imported specialty foods and sits next to a pharmacy and beauty supply shop. Several major shopping centers around the downtown area feature additional supermarkets, such as Skyview Parc, which is also home to a food hall and numerous clothing retailers. Top-rated restaurants such as Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao, Szechuan Mountain House and Jiang Nan draw neighborhood residents and people from across the city.

Flushing proper is lacking in recreational areas. Still, Kissena Corridor Park, Queens Botanical Garden and Flushing-Meadows Corona Park form a necklace of greenery at the southern edge of the enclave, about a mile south of The Harwyn. The last is especially amenity-packed, encompassing nearly 900 acres of sports facilities, trails, gardens and playgrounds. It’s also home to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which hosts the US Open; Citi Field, home of the New York Mets; the New York Hall of Science; and the Queens Museum. Closer options include Maple and Browne playgrounds, which are several blocks away. In addition, the Flushing branch of the Queens Borough Public Library, which features a contemporary design by Ennead Architects, can be reached in just moments.

Less than half a mile from the 7 train station

The 7 train terminates at Flushing-Main Street, less than half a mile from The Harwyn, and takes passengers through several prominent Queens neighborhoods — among them Jackson Heights and Long Island City — as it makes its way to Times Square and Hudson Yards in Manhattan. The Long Island Rail Road also stops on Main Street, traveling to Penn Station in one direction and Port Washington on Long Island in the other. A trip on the LIRR between Flushing and Penn Station takes approximately 20 minutes. For surface transport, the Q15 bus stops directly in front of the building and goes to Beechhurst, while the QM3 travels into midtown Manhattan. It takes about 15 minutes to drive to LaGuardia Airport from the building. There are no Citi Bike docks in the area.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
