Burbank: a young, peaceful Southland suburb
The City of Burbank is still going strong after 50 years, a relatively short history in the context of deep-rooted Chicagoland suburbs. Residents put down roots in 1970 after an infrastructure overhaul brought improved roads and waterworks to the area, a necessity that hindered development in earlier decades. Today, local institutions point to a community welcoming to folks of all backgrounds and cultures. Drivers pass St. Albert the Great Catholic Church on one side of State Road and Masjid Al-Istiqamah on the other; the local Thai joint sits doors down from the paleta spot. Whether they’re cheering from the stands at their local high school game, checking out books at the public library or walking the clean sidewalks that line these gridded streets, Burbank residents enjoy strong community ties right on Chicago’s eastern city limit.
1970s-era homes for the modern buyer
Because of its recent history, much of the housing stock in Burbank reflects 1970s design—split-level homes and bungalows with tan facades and low-pitched roofs are the community’s bread and butter. The organization of the subdivisions reflects this era, too. Homes are often pushed back on their lot, with a paved strip connecting the front door to the sidewalk. Many of the original interiors are also intact: wood panel walls, wood columns dividing rooms or even unusual twists like a wooden spiral staircase. Still, you can find brand new construction of split-levels in Burbank, which blend well with surrounding architecture but offer owners a sleeker, more modern experience inside. Homes range in price from $260,000 for smaller bungalows and ranch-styles that may need upgrades to $460,000 for larger, fully revamped options.

Getting downtown from Burbank
While no train station exists for Burbank, PACE buses run along Cicero Avenue. Metra fans aren’t entirely without options, however—the South West Service line passes through the station in nearby Oak Lawn. Cicero is also a preferred route to Interstate 55 for those making the 14-mile drive to Chicago, and it passes through Chicago Midway International Airport at the 3-mile mark. Healthcare staff and those needing medical care can head to Advocate Christ Medical Center, 3.5 miles away.
Walks to the Fusion Recplex
Burbank residents don’t have to walk far to reach a green space. Macarthur Park is home to the Fusion Recplex, which opened in 2013 with a fitness center, walking track, steam rooms and multipurpose rooms for programming like yoga, aerobics or boxing. Meanwhile, Burbank Park District Water Park is a seasonal refuge from the hot summer sun with splash zones for swimmers young and old, slides and a diving board. Haunted Trails Family Entertainment Center caps out the options with a spookily-decorated mini golf course, arcade and laser tag open for public enjoyment and private events.

Burbank’s big-box shopping and local restaurants
The eastern border of Cicero Avenue is lined with everyday destinations like Tony’s Fresh Market and large retailers spilling over from Ford City Mall. Meanwhile, the western border of Harlem Avenue is another commercial corridor and thoroughfare to greater Chicago. Popular chains like Best Buy and Walgreens can be found in either direction, while family-owned restaurants are scattered throughout the community. Sallora & Sam Bakery Grill and Catering provides family-sized seating and portions of Middle Eastern classics, while Spicy Thai Lao Restaurant offers a no-fuss takeout option. La Michoacana Azteca serves up cool paletas and other Mexican frozen treats on hot summer days.

Burbank Park District events
A blowout Party in the Park shakes up Burbank each summer with carnival rides, live music and a massive fireworks display. The festivities continue throughout the year with more laid-back excursions organized by the Burbank Park District. Prairie Trails Public Library hosts its fair share of community events, ranging from practical to inspirational. Neighbors bring boxes of leftover paper to the parking lot to shred en masse, get their blood pressure checked for free courtesy of Stickney Public Health, and sign their kids up for the Summer Reading Program and seasonal events to promote a love of literature.

With a major railyard near Burbank’s north border, Chicago Midway International Airport not far beyond and two main roads crossing at the center of town, noise and vibrations can be a lifestyle factor in the community.
