Where small-town life and outdoor recreation meet
Residents of Canton get a taste of life in the countryside and life in a small town. The community feels very rural, with hiking trails and rivers in residents’ backyards and ski resort not far away. And the neighborhood certainly doesn’t feel crowded, with lots generally spanning around 1.5 to 2 acres. Yet residents aren’t far from Collinsville, which serves as Canton’s downtown, and US Route 44, which leads directly to downtown Hartford. Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes sell for between $300,000 and $700,000, though they can go above $1 million.

Locals have space in Canton
If there’s one thing that characterizes living in Canton, it’s spaciousness. In this neighborhood, spacious homes sit upon spacious lots with spacious forests separating subdivisions. Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes sit far back from the street next to quiet brooks, the houses carving private spaces for themselves in the woods. Most homes fall between $300,000 and $700,000 and span at least 1,500 square feet, though plenty get past 3,000. Most were built the 1950s onward, but it’s not uncommon to find homes from the 19th, or even 18th, century on the market. On the other hand, the 2020s have seen the development of additional houses. Lots often span between 1.5 to 2 acres, but they can get up to a dozen acres or more. Houses with these larger lots can fetch $1 million or more. Townhouses rarely enter the market but can be found at Cantonbury Heights in the south.
Contemporary homes feature large yards and multi car garages.

The Canton School District and the arts
The Canton School District has an overall A grade on Niche. Students might follow a school feeder pattern of Cherry Brook Primary to Canton Intermediate to Canton Middle to Canton High School. Canton High School receives an A from Niche while the other three receive A-minuses. Students can participate in a half-day arts elective credit program, leaving at midday to attend classes at The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. As students will only be able to schedule four classes at CHS per day, they will need to register for courses wisely and may need to schedule summer classes, but they find this program worth it, as it allows students to earn three arts credits per year.

US Route 44/202 run through Canton and will bring locals to downtown Hartford by car in 30 minutes. A few CT Transit lines serve Canton, but they stick to US 44 and don’t venture into subdivisions.
Watersports, snow sports and more
“Canton is attractive to people who want to enjoy nature,” says Katie French, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker who has sold homes for 15 years, highlighting the Farmington River in particular. “People do yoga on waterboards in the river.” Or, residents can rent a boat from Collinsville Canoe & Kayak. Additional boating opportunities can be found at Lake McDonough. There are also several trails to enjoy like The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, a paved rails trail totaling some 80 miles. A ski resort, Ski Sundown, is on the edge of Canton, within a 15-minute drive of most residences.

Local shops and eats in Collinsville
A few local shops and restaurants can be found just to the south in Collinsville, which serves as Canton’s small downtown. “People especially appreciate Collinsville,” French says. “It's a historic part of Canton that's being revitalized.” LaSalle Market has been a staple of the community for decades, with sandwiches, pizza, donuts and more on the menu. On Friday night, LaSalle Market has an open mic night for anyone seeking to perform, be it music or comedy. Just around the corner is the Canton Main Street Farmers Market, where local farmers and vendors set up shop from June to October, offering delicious goods from strawberries to salsa. Chain restaurants and stores can be found along US Route 202 and at The Shoppes at Farmington Valley, which hosts a ShopRite and Kohl’s, among others.

Haunted Collinsville
Collinsville has thrown a Halloween Parade at the close of October for 30 years. The event kicks off with a screaming contest, live music and candy before costumed residents march down Main Street to the music of a haunting pipe organ. The spooky event concludes with the announcement of the winners of the costume contest, awarded based on scariness, originality and humor.
