Small DeKalb County city with a rich history
Chamblee once served as the location for Camp Gordon during WWI and WWII. In the 1940s, when a General Motors manufacturing plant was established nearby, Chamblee was a convenient location for employees to live. Today, this small, bustling city less than 20 miles from Atlanta is many things. It’s home to Atlanta Chinatown, a popular indoor shopping center that draws thousands of people across DeKalb County looking for authentic cuisine, tea houses and shops. It’s also an affordable option for first-time home buyers and empty nesters as they’re priced out of nearby communities. “As Buckhead and Brookhaven became unaffordable, people started moving into Chamblee.” Chris Tallman, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Atlanta who started his career selling homes in Chamblee.

Single-story homes to luxury townhomes
Chamblee is mostly residential on the north and south sides, with retailers and the Dekalb-Peachtree Airport in the center. Like many neighborhoods outside of Atlanta, subdivisions are filled with single-family homes in a classic, colonial or midcentury-era ranch-style surrounded by pine trees. Lot sizes tend to run large, giving residents big front yards and backyards spacious enough for pools or patios. In the heart of the city, luxury condos and townhomes built in 2018 or more recently are available. The median price for single-family homes is about $575,000; for townhouses, it’s a bit higher at $577,000. These prices are higher than in Atlanta but much lower than in Brookhaven.

Culturally diverse dining options along Buford Highway
“As the years have gone by, Chamblee has gotten a lot of unique restaurants, cool bars, and cool breweries. It has an old-town vibe with lots of new culture,” Tallman says of Chamblee’s restaurant and shopping scene. One big draw is Atlanta Chinatown, a shopping mall with authentic tea houses, restaurants and gift shops. Peachtree Station is another popular shopping hub, located on an old railroad site and anchored by Whole Foods. Buford Highway is lined with restaurant options, including Food Terminal, which serves Malaysian dishes, Canton House Chinese and the Vietnamese restaurant Ph? B?c. Urgent care clinics within the city provide immediate care for residents, while the Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital is located about 5 miles away. More shopping, dining and entertaining options are about 15 miles away in Atlanta.

DeKalb County School District offers school choice
The Dekalb County School District serves Chamblee. The large district includes 138 schools and serves over 92,000 students. It rates a B-minus on Niche and offers school choice. There are no private schools in the city, but several nearby: St. Pius X Catholic High School and Marist School, which serves seventh through 12th grade. Both schools have an A-plus on Niche.

Hiking through undisturbed forests at Ashford Forest Preserve
Of the multiple green spaces within the city, Keswick Park is the largest at 45 acres and includes a wheelchair-accessible playground, dog parks, and walking trails through 15 acres of forest. The park also includes a 3500-square-foot community building that residents can rent for event space. Residents head to Ashford Forest Preserve to walk through trails among its 30 acres of largely undisturbed land.

Residents gather for the Atlanta United Watch Party and the Holiday Hoopla
Hosted at the Plaza Fiesta shopping center, the Atlanta United Watch Party, sponsored by the city, is held in March and features interactive soccer games and food vendors. Niche gives Chamblee a C in crime and safety, the city can be vulnerable to hurricanes
In 2023, the Chamblee Police Department handled 591 cases. Of those, 41 were charged, and 39 ended in arrest.
Despite its location inland, Chamblee can be vulnerable to hurricanes. In 2024, Hurricane Helene caused major flooding throughout the Atlanta area.
MARTA buses and I-85 keep residents moving
Interstate 85, which connects residents to downtown Atlanta and other cities, runs along the city’s east side. The MARTA bus line has multiple stops along major thoroughfares and takes riders into downtown Atlanta. Chamblee is home to the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, a municipal facility that averages over 200,000 takeoffs and landings annually. The closest commercial airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, about 25 miles away.
