Named Money magazine’s best place to live in the U.S. in 2021, Chanhassen is known for its music roots and convenient lakefront suburban lifestyle. Residents here capitalize on their proximity to five lakes and easy access to U.S. Interstate 495 for quick 16-mile commutes into downtown Minneapolis. Home of the iconic Paisley Park – the longtime studio and home to the late, great Minnesota native Prince. The studio was converted into a museum after his death in 2016 and fans come from all over the world to pay their respect and get a glimpse of music history. “Chanhassen is a 30-minute drive to downtown Minneapolis, there’s also great public transit and they’re installing a light rail system nearby,” says Realtor Joshua Ives with Edina Realty. “The community is also known for its parks and trails.” Aside from its musical background, Chanhassen offers abundant outdoor-oriented activities from lakeside hiking to fishing off the pier at Lake Susan and sunbathing on the beaches at Lotus Lake. Prince may be their claim to fame, but Chanhassen is a not-so-sleepy suburb with much to offer.

Sunbathe on the shoreline at Carver Beach
Living in Chanhassen offers access to five lakes throughout the community: Lake Susan, Lotus Lake, Lake Ann, Rice Marsh Lake and Lake Lucy. On the southern end of the community, residents can cool off at Lake Susan and utilize the Lake Susan Public Boating Ramp to head out onto the water. Or check out the turf-based playset perfect for children to burn off some energy at Lake Susan Park. On the northern end, Lotus Lake offers a sandy shoreline at Carver Beach, which is perfect for sunbathing during the warmer months. Lotus Lake is the largest natural body within the community. Hiking enthusiasts can visit Edenbrook Conservation Area for unpaved tree-lined trails and boardwalks over Purgatory Creek. Parking is available off of Del Road. Enjoy a bit of Broadway at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, which opened in 1968 and has hosted over 12 million visitors for classic American fare and cabaret shows. Prince fans are in luck with Paisley Park within the community, offering tours of the production complex and displays of the late musicians' possessions. Entry fees are around $70 per person.

Homes in Chanhassen are priced competitively and have rebounded since a dip in demand last fall as interest rates were on the rise. “Inventory is rising, but this is still a seller’s market,” Ives says. “Our homes are in high demand; we’re seeing multiple offers and selling above list.” Housing is predominately single-family, with a healthy stock of townhouses and a handful of condos. Many homes here were constructed in the 80s and 90s, however new construction is available in areas like The Park, offering new homes situated next to 100 acres of woods and wetlands. Chanhassen offers a variety of home styles ranging from single family Colonial Revivals and New Traditionals to multi-family townhouses and condos. The community boasts subdivision options from custom non-HOA areas like Knob Hill and Big Woods On Lotus Lake to townhouses in West Park and condos in Powers Ridge. While non-HOA communities are common here, areas like Willowridge are subject to monthly fees that include hazard insurance. With a median sales price of $461,000, homes here range from around $200,000s for a one-bedroom condo to upwards of 2.5 Million for a six-bedroom lakefront New Traditional. Homes here typically offer larger lots with multi-car garages and feature nearby water access.
