Quiet green parks in Charleston
Quiet spots of green like Cannon Park, which is ideal for dog owners, are just south of Calhoun Street on the east. “It has lots of huge trees, so the area is very quiet and covered,” Doyle says. Locals also enjoy heading to The Battery along the waterfront, less than 2 miles away from the neighborhood, to “sit in the park and listen to the sound of the waves,” Doyle says. Another option, Colonial Lake Park, is often used for fishing and Doyle says this area gets “a lot of foot traffic.”NY slices and brunch delights
Lots of shopping, restaurants and trendy bars are within proximity of King Street. Sabatinos is a popular spot for New York-style pizza. “Everyone goes there, especially college students,” Doyle says. Brunch and daily caffeine fixes can be found at Caviar & Bananas, a local coffee shop that offers fast-casual dishes and drinks in an upscale and modern setting, from a quick salad to specialty sandwiches like The Aztec. Residents can shop for groceries and fresh produce at the downtown Harris Teeter or at the weekly farmers market at Marion Square.Downtown events and Second Sunday
Residents are just a short walk away from downtown events like the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and the Fourth of July Fireworks Show. But while downtown Charleston hosts many festivities, the Second Sunday event each month is a very large part of the Radcliffeborough community. On that second Sunday, the city blocks off roughly half a mile of King Street, allowing residents to walk around the area to visit local shops, peruse the wares of local artists that set up booths, or enjoy a treat from one of the many food vendors.Historic Charleston single houses
Radcliffeborough is famous for its historic streets and architecture. Charleston Single Houses line many of the streets of the neighborhood, a style of home only unique to the city to accommodate for the narrow lots on the peninsula. Many homes make use of street parking as few houses have driveways. “Almost all the buildings are close together, which I really like,” says Chloe Doyle, a COFC student and administrative assistant at 61 Vandy apartments for over 2 years. “And each of the houses are so unique.” Condos and townhouses often range from $400,000 to around $700,000, and single-family homes range from $700,000 to $1.4 million.Walkability on historic Charleston streets
Maneuvering Charleston streets can sometimes be tricky. Although very walkable, many roads are antiquated and narrow, built for the horses and wagons of times past. Charleston's one-way system can add to the confusion. “There is not a lot of street parking, and people usually avoid driving around here,” Doyle says. “There are a lot of bikers and walkers in the area, especially around King Street.” For trips outside of the state, the Charleston International Airport is 11 miles to the north.Charleston County School District
Students in Radcliffeborough are served by the Charleston County School District and can begin their education at Memminger Elementary School, which earns a C-plus rating on Niche. They may continue on to Simmons-Pinckney Middle School and then finish up at Burke High School, whose marching band is known state-wide. Both the middle and high schools earn a C rating. The College of Charleston is also nearby and is the only school to offer a degree in archeology in the state of South Carolina.MUSC Health University Medical Center
The neighborhood is home to the MUSC Health University Medical Center, the only comprehensive academic health system in the state of South Carolina. The center works with six different universities to both aid and educate students and residents alike. “The hospital is right there, but it never really bothers me,” Doyle says. “I rarely hear ambulances.”
