Lined with nature preserves, trails and scenic views, Mountain Island is a desirable locale for those who want to escape the rush of Charlotte's center city. "It's kind of a hidden neighborhood, often overshadowed by Lake Norman or Lake Wylie," says Steven Ryle, a Broker with Maultsby Realty Group with several years of experience in the area. "But what's really cool about the area is the convenience of getting into Uptown and the protection of the lake’s scenery." Since much of the lake shoreline is owned by Duke Energy or part of the Latta Nature Preserve, residents rest easy knowing that wide swaths of their lush landscape are protected from development.

Mountain Island Lake
The lake is a central part of life in Mountain Island, even for those who don't have waterfront properties. The public can head to the Riverbend access point, 5 miles away off Highway 16 and Horseshoe Bend Road. But many choose to enjoy the water from the Latta Nature Preserve. The Preserve is the largest in Mecklenburg County, with over 1,460 acres of natural land. "What sets Mountain Island Lake apart from other lakes in the area is the miles of Latta Preserve walking trails," Ryle explains. "You can bring your kids or your dogs and experience the water without owning a boat." Public water fountains, restrooms and picnic areas invite visitors to stay for a while, and summer weekends can get packed. Five miles north of the Latta Preserve, locals enjoy heading up to Historic Rural Hill, a Colonial-era farm that hosts the popular North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival in the spring and the Amazing Maize Maze in the autumn.

Most of the properties in the area are from the year 2000 or later, though there are a few original midcentury homes that start at $250,000 and get up to $500,000 for several-acre lots. But for the most part, buyers are looking at new traditional homes ranging from $350,000 to $550,000, clustered in subdivisions with HOAs. These homes have spacious interiors with large bedrooms and often feature rustic stone detailing on the exterior. The Polo Club community offers 55-plus living around a similar price point. Mountain Island's waterfront estates with private docks start at $800,000 and climb to over $1 million. And for those looking to build a custom home, a few available empty lots come on the market from time to time, with a wide range of prices from $300,000 to $1 million.

Connected to major thoroughfares
The residential areas are not very walkable, so locals rely on cars to get around. The neighborhood has direct access to Interstate 485, which goes east and west of the city, connecting to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, 10 miles away. When heading into Uptown, residents connect with either Highway 16 or Interstate 77. In general, the 10-mile trip takes around 20 minutes, but it can be closer to 35 with traffic.

Nearby schools and public library
Neighborhood kids are part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District. Kids are zoned to start at Mountain Island Lake Academy, which serves grades kindergarten through eighth. The school receives a C-plus rating from Niche. Then it's on to Hopewell High School, rated B-minus. The high school offers Career and Technical Education courses and the Cambridge program. The program is similar to AP classes, offering an international distinction to Cambridge learners. And outside of school, kids can head to Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Mountain Island branch for arts and crafts, tutoring and summer camps.

Adjacent to a small commercial hub
The closest commercial area is clustered around the intersection of Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road and Highway 16, around 1 mile away from most homes. The shopping center includes a Walmart and Harris Teeter for daily essentials and a selection of chain eateries. Shuffletown Grill has been serving breakfast in their retro diner since 1957, and Nana Morrison's is a family-owned restaurant for soul food.
