History and a tightknit community anchor Beverly

Beverly, sometimes known as Beverly Hills, is perched on the highest geographical point in the Chicago area, known as the Blue Island Ridge – which takes its name from the blue wildflowers that once flourished there. Caroline Conners, director of the Morgan Park Beverly Hills Business Association, says that proximity to nature continues to be a draw to the area. But there are several other reasons, too: a small-town community feel, plus traditional suburban housing that has stood the test of time. Beverly grew after the completion of the Rock Island Railroad, which provided easy access from downtown via rail and streetcar. The neighborhood population boomed in the years after World War II, and Beverly, just 15 miles from downtown, is now home to about 20,000 residents.

Brick bungalows, ornate Victorians, modern Prairie homes

Most Beverly neighborhood houses were built before 1969, giving the area a stylish midcentury aesthetic. Streets are filled with spacious brick bungalows and Prairie style houses, including a few in the Longwood Drive Historic District designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Indeed, Beverly has a bit of a reputation for architectural flair, including an Irish-style castle that now houses the Beverly Unitarian Church. Prices start in the upper $200,000s for a streamlined three-bedroom bungalow. Victorians and Prairie style houses are in the mid $400,000s to mid $500,000s. Small hedges and ornamental trees, neatly mulched beds and smooth uniform stretches of front lawn are the norm.

Urban gardening at Sutherland Elementary

Sutherland Elementary is a kindergarten through 8th grade institution that earns a C-plus from Niche. True to Beverly’s penchant for enjoying green spaces, the school offers an urban gardening club. Open since 1914, Morgan Park High serves over 1,000 students and earns a C-minus overall, but a B in clubs and activities. Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were consistent regional champions throughout the 2010s.

Small parks and a big forest preserve

Beverly’s north side runs into Dan Ryan Woods, a forest preserve sprawling across 250 acres. It offers an 8-mile trail to hike or bike on. Plus, the Beverly Country Club is attached, and on clear days the Chicago skyline is visible. Smaller parks in Beverly host Chicago Park District programming yearly, including movie events and a six-week summer camp. Ridge Park is nearly 10 acres of recreation space with playing fields and a fieldhouse that hosts community activities.

A classic American dining scene

Taking pride in its longevity as a Chicago neighborhood, Beverly has kept a village-like feel over the generations and has many small businesses that remain community favorites. Janson’s Drive-In on South Western Avenue is a good example of the classic American cuisine that’s popular in Beverly. Locals know to look for the boxy retro building and neon signs. The Original Rainbow Cone, located in a confection pink-colored building, has served the neighborhood with multicolored-scoop ice cream cones for nearly 100 years. Wild Blossom Meadery and Winery on Hermitage Avenue offers wine and mead made with local ingredients. It also hosts special events, a tasting room and mead clubs. Shopping outlets along South Western Avenue and West 95th Street, along with the Evergreen Plaza and Marketplace shopping malls just a few blocks outside Beverly, boast thriving local and national retailers, including Meijer, Whole Foods and Menards.

Multiple Metra stations

This is a commuter friendly neighborhood with multiple public transportation options. Western Avenue and West 95th Street are major thoroughfares for drivers, but also served by buses. Five stops for the Metra Rock Island line also fall within Beverly. Otherwise, the landscape offers up a quiet residential grid dotted by small parks, so pedestrians are well served, too.

The properties are very nice and the area feels very safe. I have never felt the feeling that I am in danger of someone in Beverly. There are several local coffee shops, churches, and schools. There many Catholic grade school options and a few public grade schools.

Residents are very involved when it comes to the community being a safer place for everyone. There is some crime such as robbery and breaking & entering. Local meetings are held every week for this matter as it plays a huge part in making the community a better environment for residents, especially elders and children.

Beverly is an extremely safe neighborhood, where children are free to play and there are many places to have fun within the neighborhood. There are even houses in the alley which lessens the risk for crime. Beverly is not very diverse, but there are people of all races here.
