Large neighborhood near downtown Chicago
Norwood Park, a Chicago community center on the far north side of the city, is made up of several smaller communities, including historic Old Norwood Park, Oriole Park and others. With several annual festivals, its large namesake park and direct transportation options to downtown, the neighborhood balances suburban comfort and community without sacrificing city access. "It is a big community with lots of businesspeople and teachers because it is close to the city," says Lisa Sanders with @properties Christie’s International.
Easy access to Chicago and O'Hare
Norwood Park's location enables direct commutes to the city, whether by car or public transit. Interstate 90 and Harlem Avenue meet at the center of the neighborhood, taking residents about 12 miles southeast to the Loop. The Harlem station has CTA trains near I-90 and Bryn Mawr Avenue. CTA bus stops are also available along most of the major roads. Metra commuter trains stop at the Norwood Park station on Northwest Highway for trips to the Loop or northwestern suburbs.
Medical services are available at Ascension Resurrection, a hospital on the northwest side of the neighborhood on Talcott Avenue.
Varied home styles on Chicago's far northwest side
Norwood Park’s housing runs the gamut of popular Chicago home styles from the 20th and early 21st centuries and includes several historic homes in Old Norwood Park. Single-family houses include Georgians, American Foursquares, Craftsman bungalows, as well as modern farmhouses and Tudor-influenced properties. Smaller two- and three-bedroom homes are generally available from $240,000 to $585,000, while three- to five-bedroom properties with more than 2,000 square feet of space range from $430,000 to $900,000. The area’s most luxurious properties can reach as high as $1.4 million. “It’s a very in-demand area where the lots are larger, and there’s newer construction builds from the 1970s and 1980s,” says Phil Mistrata, a team lead and broker with Dream Town Realty.
Multi-family properties include condominiums from the 1960s and 1970s, mid-century duplexes, and a few townhomes. Prices typically range from $105,000 to $335,000 for condo units and smaller duplexes. Larger multi-unit properties with two to five flats are generally available between $460,000 and $800,000.

Important things to know
Residences close to I-90 and the neighborhood center may experience higher noise levels. Due to the area’s proximity to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and its location on common flight paths, locals may also hear overhead planes frequently. Qualifying homeowners can sign up for the airport’s Residential Sound Insulation Program, which adds modifications throughout the home to mitigate ambient noise; many homes in the neighborhood have already been upgraded.
Dress up for dinner at Tavern on the Point
Much of Norwood Park is a few blocks away from the business corridors along Higgins and Harlem avenues. Jewel-Osco, Mariano’s and Aldi sit alongside smaller shops like Nottoli Italian Foods, a deli with ready-made lunch subs and a selection of groceries. Independent retailers nearby include Atlas Comics, a shop specializing in new releases and back issues, and GiGi Boutique, which offers women’s fashions inspired by the owners’ Polish roots. Big box stores such as Target, Best Buy and Kohl’s are to the south.
A pair of hot dog statues named Maurie and Flaurie stand tall on the roof of Superdawg, an old-school drive-in established in Norwood Park in 1948. The restaurant takes its name from the signature hot dog, with mustard, relish, onion and hot peppers on a poppyseed bun; the mascots, meanwhile, take their names from the place’s founders. Amitabul Simply Vegan landed on Eater’s “Best Healthy Food in Chicago” list in 2022. This Korean eatery has cozy environs inspired by the owners’ Buddhist traditions and a menu with stir fry, bibimbap and a “cure-all” noodle soup. Pasta d’Arte Trattoria Italiana offers classic Tuscan dishes in a chandelier-lit setting, with a broad selection of imported wines.

Take a swim at Norwood Park
In the summertime, Norwood Park's pool opens for visitors to enjoy the water slides and participate in various youth sports programs. The park is also home to the Senior Center, which offers classes and health services. On the neighborhood’s southwest side, Oriole Park’s rec center provides piano lessons, preschool care and cooking classes, among other services for kids and grown-ups.
Golfers can visit the Ridgemoor Country Club to the south or the Edgebrook Golf Course at the Edgebrook Woods Forest Preserve to the north. Both have 18-hole courses and offer membership programs for frequent visitors; Edgebrook offers public enrollment, while Ridgemoor is by invitation only. Beyond its golf course, Edgebrook Woods also connects to the lengthy North Branch Trail system, which runs through its neighboring preserves over 20 miles for hiking and biking.
Wear green to the Northwest Side Irish Parade
Community gatherings are longstanding and festive. The Northwest Side Irish Parade rolls into Norwood Park each St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The annual festivities include performances from ensembles performing traditional song and dance, themed floats and plenty of merrymaking from the spectating crowd. Each autumn, the Norwood Park Chamber hosts the Fall Festival, a weekend where live music, local businesses, Chicago breweries and family entertainment converge at the heart of the neighborhood. Other annual events include the Memorial Day Parade, celebrated for over 100 years, and the Spring Wine Stroll.

Norwood Park is a great family friendly neighborhood with lots of food, fun and outdoor parks to enjoy with your family. It is a safe neighborhood that houses a lot of Chicago's finest policemen and firefighters.

The overall experience of living in this area for my family and myself is relatively good. It feels nice, quiet, and safe, almost like living in the suburbs but still getting all the benefits of city life, like the variety of business near to home. I would choose to live here again but it is more suitable for young families or old ones. The area does not contribute much to the families with children 16+.
