Walking to work and play in Streeterville
"If somebody were coming to me about Streeterville, the first thing I’d mention is it’s very walkable,” says Julie Latsko, team lead at Compass and nearby Gold Coast resident. “You’re close to grocery stores, everything is very accessible by foot. Having the hospital means during the weekday it’s a lot busier. During the day it’s bustling if you’re driving, and that's why I think most people who live there walk or take public transit.” Options for getting home include the Green Line to Washington/Wabash or the Red Line to Grand, though not all residents are within close proximity to the station. “They don't always have immediate access to the Red Line or train system, but there are a bunch of bus systems to use and you have the Chicago Water Taxi taking you right into the city or down to the museums,” Ciochon says. While medical care is close by, residents must make a 17-mile trip for commercial flights at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.Ample downtown dining and shopping
Streeterville residents are within walking distance of an abundance of shops and amenities. Water Tower Place offers hours of shopping for clothes, gifts, home essentials and more. The mall features a plethora of stores from Sephora to Free People and Bath & Body Works. Groceries and other day-to-day necessities can be found at the local Wholefoods Market, Target or Walgreens. In addition to all the shops and activities Streeterville has to offer, the neighborhood is also home to an abundance of popular restaurants. Walking outside of the children’s museum towards the end of the pier leads to Offshore Rooftop, the largest rooftop bar in the world, where patrons can enjoy flavorful menu items while taking in gorgeous views of Lake Michigan and the scenic Chicago skyline. Traveling west on Grand Avenue takes residents to Labriola, an indulgent Italian food favorite. Meanwhile, Streeterville also has its fair share of beloved Chicago chain locations, like brunch favorite Yolk or glitzy Minghin Cuisine. From historic Mies van der Rohe to sleek 600 LSD
Neighborhood homebuyers have a wide range of prices and building styles to choose from, with Streeterville’s residential buildings ranging from 21st century high rises to early 20th century stone mid-rises with elegant exterior adornments. “The cool thing about Streeterville is you have high-end luxury homes, but the area also some vintage buildings as well,” says Ciochon. "There’s a vintage feel on the northside, kind of like Manhattan where it’s densely populated.” Studio condos for rent provide students with affordable options close to their place of work and study. As for ownership, one-bedroom, one-bathroom condos range from $230,000 to $425,000, while larger units can range from $600,000 to up to $1.5 million.Ohio Street Beach summers and dog-friendly Olive Park
Although the neighborhood is the definition of high-rise city living, Streeterville honors the city's reputation for a wealth of green spaces and parks. Lake Shore Park provides a multiuse sports field, playground, walking track and tennis courts, while Milton Lee Olive Park offers a relaxing stroll on the paved lakeside paths and picnic spots under tree foliage, all in the company of furry friends. In the summer months, Streeterville locals and tourists alike can be found flocking to Ohio Street Beach to lounge on the sand. “A lot of triathletes use that beach because they have a swimming lane along the concrete running path, so they can can swim half a mile one way and back,” adds Ciochon.Events for Streeterville locals and visitors
Fireworks and countless events at the pier aside, nearby museums provide activities for rainy days. Navy Pier’s Chicago Children’s Museum features hands-on exhibits including the art studio, where children of all ages can tap into their creative side with hands-on art workshops and activities, and the dinosaur expedition exhibit, where kids can unleash their inner paleontologist by digging for dino bones and comparing fossils. Tuesdays on the Terrace provides drinks and live music set against the Museum of Contemporary Art. For an elegant evening on the town, folks head to Winter's Jazz Club.Streeterville-adjacent school options
Locals may send their kids to Ogden Elementary School on Walton Street, where students partake in fine arts classes that help young learners to develop motor skills, visual learning techniques, language development skills and decision-making abilities. The school serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a B-minus from Niche. Wells Community High School serves around 400 students and has student to teacher ratios of 12-1, and scores a C-plus rating.
