Collierville is among the few Memphis area communities that still has a historic and vibrant town square. Visitors to Collierville’s square can enjoy attractions like the train depot or the numerous mom and pop shops located in the surrounding historic buildings. During the holidays, lights and garlands transform this block into a lively destination. The Hallmark network has even used the town as the setting for its movie, “Wedding at Graceland.”. “In Germantown, you got that Saddle Creek shopping center that has all the stores in it, like Jos. A. Bank. Collierville doesn’t have a whole lot of those. It’s a quaint little city that has its own little downtown area,” says Harry Samuels, a Realtor with Pinnacle Realty. “In fact, we went through it the other night and it’s all decorated for Christmas and has little carriage rides. It’s really nice.”
Located on the eastern end of the Memphis metro area, The Town of Collierville is a small city that also comprises one of the Bluff City’s most affluent suburbs. In addition to the historic square, the town also has a growing inventory of upscale housing options, a vibrant shopping and dining scene, strong schools and an abundance of recreational activities.

Upscale subdivisions filled with Greek Revivals and new Traditionals
Collierville’s homes were built between the 1990s and the present date, and span various subdivisions. Winding paths give residents a place to walk beneath the shade of mature trees while taking in scenic views. Greek Revivals, contemporary Traditionals and Colonial Revivals are among the common styles in Collierville. Many of these homes have footprints of several thousand square feet and sit on well-manicured lawns that run between a third-of-an-acre to half an acre in size.
Collierville’s desirability and growing housing stock drive up costs, making it one of the most expensive markets in the Memphis metro. Collierville has a median list price of $550,000, about $140,000 above the national median and nearly triple Memphis’ median. Collierville’s median list price is also slightly higher than that of neighboring Germantown. Most single-family homes here cost roughly between $400,000 and $900,000. However, the newest homes in communities like The Stables can sell for over $1 million. “And even in this economy, they’re selling pretty quickly,” Samuels adds.

Pints, pizzas and upscale Italian in Collierville Town Square
The square’s numerous boutiques carry everything from personal items, jewelry and houseware to children’s and women’s clothing, western style boots and French country style furniture. Dining and lunch options include upscale Italian at Cafe Piazza and David Grisanti’s On Main, while the Highlander Scottish Pub is a spot for comfort foods and pints of beer.
In the commercial corridor around Poplar Avenue and Byhalia Road, Tony’s Trophy Room is a spot for local sports fans looking to kick-back drinks and catch up on the latest news and highlights. With chains like Kroger, Target and Walmart, this area is the town’s primary shopping destination. The Poplar and Houston Levee Road area is home to a Huey’s, a popular string of Memphis restaurants known for their live music shows and unique traditions like allowing patrons to scribble messages on their walls.

Collierville Town Square’s historic attractions and annual hot air balloon festival
Long-time Memphis area resident Michael Pridgen says, “The town square, it’s a great little kind of place that’s back in time. It kind of has an old style, old time, homey feel to it. It’s just a good place.” The train depot sits adjacent to the site of the town’s original depot, which served a key function during the Civil War’s First Battle of Collierville in 1863. Visitors here can also tour some rail cars or stop to admire the trains from a bench on one of the nearby train platforms. If they look closely, they’ll notice the benches here and in nearby Town Square Park stand atop green wrought-iron wagon wheels. Celebrations take place here seasonally, like the Fair in the Square in May and the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in late November.
Other major events in town include the Collierville Balloon Festival, a hot air balloon show held each September that includes carnival rides and numerous food and art vendors. Local institutions include the New Day Children’s Theatre, which receives praise across the Memphis area for its high-quality productions.

Dozen parks, 18-mile trail network, fishing and kayaking on the Wolf River
Collierville has a dozen official parks, featuring everything from playgrounds, splash pads and soccer and baseball fields to a nature preserve with a boardwalk that leads through a forest of hardwood trees. Anglers can access many lakes, including at W.C. Johnson Park, which offers access to surrounding woodlands and the Wolf River. Kayakers frequent the waterway, which flows into the much larger Mississippi River in downtown Memphis.
The roughly 18-mile Collierville Greenbelt system attracts walkers, joggers and avid cyclists. Many also enjoy leisure activities along Wolf River Boulevard. “That whole road now is like a park. You’ve got bicycle lanes, parks on both sides. It’s huge,” says Pridgen, the owner of Meta-Tech Systems, a general construction company. Golfers looking for top playing grounds will also find private options at the Ridgeway Country Club and the Memphis National Golf Club.

Second best school district in Tennessee
The Collierville Schools district serves this community and receives an overall A grade from Niche. The ratings site also ranks the district as the second best in the state. In total, the district oversees nine schools, including the flagship Collierville High School, which also gets an A from Niche. Collierville High’s programming also includes a dual enrollment opportunity with the University of Memphis for students pursuing the culinary arts.
The Mid-South Gifted Academy and St. George’s Independent School are two area private options. Both schools serve students from prekindergarten to 12th grade, while St. George’s — which has two other campuses in Germantown and Memphis — gets an A-plus from Niche.

Industrial jobs and small health care hub
Many in Collierville work for FedEx, which is headquartered in Memphis and employs well over 30,000 people in the Memphis area. Air conditioner maker Carrier also has a Collierville plant which employs over 1,000 workers. The vast and Memphis-based Baptist Memorial Health Care system serves Collierville through its hospital campus in town. “People are glad when people send them to the Collierville hospital because they’re not nearly as crowded,” Samuels says.
Collierville’s biggest growth period occurred between the 1980s and early 2010s and today,the town has a population of 51,300 people, 16% higher than in 2010.
Poplar Avenue connects Collierville to downtown Memphis, more than 25 miles west, and Collierville residents can quickly hop on Tennessee State Route 385, also known as Bill Morris Parkway, for faster travel. The highway connects to both Interstates 240 and 269, the latter of which goes to the suburban communities in northeast Shelby County. Interstate 240 and Interstates 40 and 69 form an inner beltway in Memphis. The Memphis International Airport is the hub for commercial flights.

As part of the Memphis area, Collierville has four true seasons. The area notably experiences warm, humid summers and mild winters that occasionally bring one or two light snowfalls. Extreme weather events mainly involve thunderstorms, but tornadoes can pass through the area, too. Collierville belongs to West Tennessee, which saw 11 tornadoes in 2023 but only a few in 2024.
Collierville is one of the safest communities in the Memphis area. Memphis’ violent crime rate is approximately 10 times higher than Collierville’s. Memphis’ property crime rate is also about six times higher than Collierville’s. Collierville’s crime rates are also slightly lower than the country’s.
