At the heart of Downtown El Monte is a Main Street business district, which features about a dozen blocks of shops, boutiques and diverse restaurants. Local clothing stores include Sally Shoes and El Vaquero, which sells Western-style apparel. The community has many Mexican restaurants, including El Huarache De Dona Chela Restaurant, a no-frills family-owned spot known for its authentic fare. The casual diner Golden Ox Burgers serves all-day breakfast, while Progress on Main has cocktails and events like Horror Nights, a Halloween party with a costume contest and a DJ. Plus, there’s Asian food at laid-back eateries like Thai Excellente and Tai Pan Chinese Food. For groceries, residents can stop by Superior Grocers, located on the northern edge of the neighborhood.

Many community events like El Monte Farmers Market, Dive-in Movies and more
From March through October, locals and vendors converge at the weekly El Monte Farmers Market. Every Thursday on Main Street, locals can find fresh produce, prepared foods and entertainment like vintage car displays. At the summertime Dive-in Movies, people can swim in the pool at El Monte Aquatic Center while watching family-friendly films. More community events include the Santa Float in December, where Mr. Claus and his elves drive through the streets of El Monte in a sleigh. There’s also a Tiny Tot Turkey Trot, where kids dressed in turkey costumes can race and play in bounce houses.

Proximity to LA, Monrovia and Arcadia
Downtown El Monte attracts those who want proximity to downtown Los Angeles as well as easy access to the rest of the San Gabriel Valley. “People often move there because it’s adjacent to Monrovia and Arcadia,” says real estate agent David Ramirez, who works with Century 21 Masters and has over a decade of experience in the area. Via Interstate 10, downtown El Monte is around 15 miles away from downtown Los Angeles. For public transportation, residents can hop on a train at El Monte Metrolink Station or Metro buses at El Monte Transit Center. Both stations are conveniently located, just blocks away from the Main Street retail hub. These transit options enhance what is already a highly walkable neighborhood. For medical services, residents can go to Southern California Medical Center El Monte, only 2 miles from the neighborhood. The closest major airport is the Hollywood Burbank Airport, about 25 miles away.

El Monte Aquatic Center, in the southern part of the neighborhood, has both indoor and outdoor pools, where residents can participate in swimming lessons or team sports. A few miles north of the neighborhood, Peck Road Water Conservation Park is one of the most popular recreation spots in the area.
