Life by the beach

When you live in the small city of El Segundo, you'll delight in a downtown with a small-town vibe but with access to South Bay's beaches, the Los Angeles International Airport right next door, and the greater metropolitan area nearby. Its meaning in Spanish is "the second." But this isn't a popularity contest — the name comes from its location with the second of Standard's oil refineries in the area. The refinery, now owned by Chevron, is a major employer in the area, providing over 1,000 jobs. Industrial sites make up a portion of the neighborhood, separate from the convenient downtown area and comfortable residential streets elsewhere in El Segundo.

El Segundo Beach and other parks

El Segundo Beach is a perfect spot for surfing, volleyball, and relaxing by the water. The nearby Strand offers a scenic route for biking and walking, connecting to neighboring beach towns like Mahattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. The multiuse location Recreation Park is known by locals as "Rec and Park and Library," according to Debbie Miller, recreation specialist at the Joslyn Recreation Center. She explains that there are multiple options for different age groups and types of activities: "The Josyln Center deals with the seniors; they have exercise activities, a senior club, and luncheons all the time." Miller says a spot called "The Club House" is geared toward youngsters, and another facility, "The Check Out," focuses on outdoor activities. "They have pickleball, basketball, tennis, and it's a great place for picnics," Miller says.

El Segundo High School, which is rated 10-out-of-10 on Greatschools, is recognizable from its presence in films and TV shows, including "The O.C.," "Superbad," and "All American." Off-screen, real-life students collaborate with the City of El Segundo during the annual Civics Day. The school won an Exemplary Arts Education Program Award, and the robotics club, P.O.T.A.T.O.E.S., won a regional design award. If you're wondering what that spud-tastic name stands for, it's "People Of Tomorrow Applying Their Outstanding Engineering Skills."

Midcentury and modern homes

Those streets where you'll make your home have well-maintained sidewalks, typically shaded by tall trees, some showing off colorful blossoms. Home styles include 1920s designs, like Tudor Revivals with steep decorative gables and wide multipaned windows. A midcentury cottage is just the place to enjoy ocean views. Or opt for a condominium showing off Spanish-style elements, like roof tiles and a balcony. Lavish custom homes built in the 2000s can have as much as 4,000 square feet of space and costs verging on $3 million. Otherwise, typical prices start at about $600,000 for condos and townhouses and continue to rise; most single-family homes are over $1 million.

Getting around South Bay

El Segundo's proximity to LAX is a significant advantage for frequent travelers, though it also brings challenges related to traffic and noise. The city is served by several major roadways, including Interstate 105 and Pacific Coast Highway, making commuting to other parts of Los Angeles County relatively straightforward, though congestion can be an issue. Public transportation options are available, with Metro bus lines connecting El Segundo to surrounding areas and the Green Line light rail offering an alternative route to downtown Los Angeles and beyond. Additionally, coastal bike trails connect El Segundo to neighboring beach towns to the south.
