A community centered around the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park
A 1920s amusement park got the ball rolling on the community of Lakeview, and it remains a centerpiece of the area today. When Carl and Minette Dixon bought land around Lake Winnepesaukah – referred to locally as Lake Winnie – they opened the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park in 1925. As their project grew in popularity and size, so did the residential space surrounding the park, transforming the rural landscape into a popular suburb just below the Tennessee-Georgia state line. And yes, Lake Winnie Amusement Park -- as it's called now -- still operates seasonally, right where it all started.
“Plenty of people work in Chattanooga, so it’s a perfect hub for families. Sort of rural, but the city is so close for any modern convenience you want,” says Debbie King, the owner and managing broker for DK Real Estate. Though Lakeview is within close proximity to Chattanooga, locals don’t have to drive into the city for a bite to eat or a trip to the grocery store, as restaurants and shops line U.S. Route 27, which runs through the neighborhood. In addition to easy shopping and dining, life in Lakeview means being surrounded by outdoor recreation and soaring mountain views in northern Georgia’s suburban-rural landscape.
Vintage homes dot the semi-rural landscape
With Lookout Mountain towering in the distance, ranch-style homes and cottages line the wooded neighborhood streets. The residential area of Lakeview took off in the 1950s, and many vintage homes still stand, either well-maintained or renovated. Though many of the homes are established, there are pockets of new construction. Newer construction follows contemporary trends, mixing classic characteristics such as dormer windows and steep gabled roofing with modern interior designs. Some neighborhood streets have sidewalks, so residents generally need a car to get around. Yard space is common considering the semi-rural composition of Lakeview, even in planned subdivisions of townhouses, so many homes are surrounded by greenery. Prices range from $130,000 to $400,000.
Parks, lakes and Lookout Mountain
Nearby Gilbert-Stephenson Park offers an extensive list of amenities, including a playground, tennis and pickleball courts, a swimming pool and a walking path. The playground equipment has recently been updated with inclusive design features for children with special needs. The amusement park is modeled after the classic American fair theme, with a midway that features games, food and smaller rides. It’s expanded over its many years of operation, now featuring an attached waterpark and full-fledged rollercoasters. The neighborhood is also close to lakes, such as Lake Winnie, and stunning mountain vistas for those looking for a little more adventure. “Chickamauga Creek is really popular for kayaking and canoeing,” King says. “And you’re not far from Lookout Mountain, so there’s plenty to do outdoors.”
The Catoosa County School District
The Catoosa County School District serves the residents of Lakeview. “Catoosa County is well-known for its schools, we’ve got some of the best schools for miles, and I think that draws people in,” says King. Students can begin at Cloud Springs Elementary School, which scored a B-minus on Niche. They can move on to Lakeview Middle School and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, both of which received a B on Niche while also earning the No.3 spot for Best Public Middle Schools in Catoosa County and Best Public High Schools in Catoosa County, respectively. Lakeview High offers dual enrollment through the Catoosa County College and Career Academy.
Family-owned restaurants and Southern comfort food
Though Lakeview is largely residential, shops and restaurants line the main thoroughfare of LaFayette Road. Peppered in with big-name retailers and chain restaurants are locally owned businesses that give the neighborhood a unique flair. The Big Biscuit Barn offers homemade Southern breakfast and brunch from a quaint building. For a quick bite on the go, The Barn has a drive through. For some authentic south-of-the-border food, La Familia Mexican Restaurant is a family-owned spot right off LaFayette Road known for its margaritas and karaoke nights. For groceries, there's a Food City about a mile and a half west.
Travel in Lakeview and beyond
U.S. Route 27 runs through the southwest corner of the neighborhood, providing a direct route to Downtown Chattanooga about 6 miles north. Though public transportation is not offered directly in the neighborhood, the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) services several bus stops along Rossville Boulevard about a mile and a half west of Lakeview. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 7 miles north.
