Historic homes and small-town charm in Selwyn Farms
A short mile from downtown Frederick, Maryland, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, sits a lively neighborhood called Selwyn Farms. Filled with historic homes, homegrown restaurants, and bustling parks, locals enjoy small-town living with access to big-city nightlife in neighboring cities. Walking through Selwyn Farms, you can admire the architectural styles of the homes, including brick Colonial Revivals, Second Empire and colorful Queen Annes. The neighborhood seeps with history with houses from the 19th and 20th centuries. Homeowners enjoy modest front yards and tree-lined streets just outside the downtown limits. Life here includes the possibility of a relaxing evening on the front porch, watching the sunset over the Catoctin Mountain range.

Lower prices with access to Frederick's city center
With more room to breathe, home prices are slightly more affordable than in the highly sought-after city center. The average list price hovers around the mid $400,000s. A four-bed, two-and-a-half bath Colonial may sell in the mid $500,000s, while a traditional three-bed, two-and-a-half bath town house may sell in the upper $300,000s. “It’s one of the fastest growing cities in Maryland with many job opportunities in the science and tech industry,” says Laurie Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Hood College.

Public and private schooling options
While parents are at work, children in the area attend North Frederick Elementary School and Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School. Governor Thomas Johnson High School boasts a variety of after-school clubs for students. Students can find a close-knit community amongst the Black Student Union or nurture connections through the Best Buddies program. The Banner School, a private school serving pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students, is also in the neighborhood. With small classroom sizes and an emphasis on performing and visual arts, this non-profit institution claims to put students first.

Open space and creek side recreation at Staley Park
Walking along North Market Street, you will notice busy Staley Park. The 20+ acres of grassy fields with picnic benches scattered throughout make it a great spot to enjoy a book on a bench or play a game of fetch with your dog. The chuckle of children serves as background noise as you stroll across the cobblestone pedestrian bridges over the creek. Catch an impromptu game of basketball or head to the baseball diamond to practice your swing. On the edge of Selwyn Farms is also Monocacy Village Park. Here, on a sunny afternoon, strike up a friendly game of pickleball. The six outdoor pickle courts are free and open to the public year-round.

Downtown Frederick shopping and nearby eateries
With downtown only blocks away, entertainment and dining options are bountiful. “Downtown Frederick is amazing and within walking distance,” Ward says. However, those looking to stay close to home can go to the Monocacy Village Shopping Center. Here, you will find Oscar’s Alehouse, noted as the best-kept secret in Frederick. The family-friendly atmosphere makes it a wonderful place to grab a drink and snack after work. Patrons rave over the warm, soft-serve pretzels and beer cheese. Another favorite spot is the Showroom, which serves modern American cuisine and Rockwell Brewery, where you can grab an ice-cold beer brewed on-site. A quick trip up North Market Street will lead you to Cugino Forno Neapolitan Pizza. With spacious outdoor seating, sit back while you enjoy authentic, oven-baked pizza. As you munch down on the crunchy but light crust, the aroma of fresh basil fills the air. Make sure to leave enough room to revel in the rich and delectable gelato and homemade cannoli. For a trip to the grocery store, head to The Common Market in the College Park Shopping Center. Locals snack on their fresh, organic produce. While you’re there, stop by the café for a thick, creamy smoothie.

Weekend activities from seasonal events to first Saturday sales
Plans for the weekend could include diving into the history of early America at the Rose Hill Manor Park and Museum or treating yourself to a massage at the New York New York Hair Salon Day Spa. Or it could include attending one of the many town events. “The area is extremely community-oriented, with celebrations scattered throughout the year. On the first Saturday of the month, restaurants and businesses have special sales and events, such as indoor tastings,” Ward says.
Access to Washington and Baltimore
With access to major interstates, commutes to nearby cities such as Washington, DC and Baltimore are doable. Sidewalks and bus routes along North East Street make it a pedestrian-friendly area close to Frederick's local shops and delicious restaurants.
