Established, attractive, walkable neighborhood with special amenities
Fig Garden, also known as Old Fig Garden, is a well-established, unincorporated area of 6 square miles surrounded by Fresno. Streets lined with tall fig trees that date to the early 1900s and populated with a wide variety of attractive single-family homes contribute to the popularity of the close-knit community. The neighborhood was created in 1947 when the Fig Garden’s Men’s Club, now the Fig Garden Home Owners Association, achieved nonprofit corporate status that gave it more local control. The pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is a prized locale, where residents walking their dogs, riding their bikes or just out for a morning stroll are everyday sights. The community features its own police district and fire department and is known for a signature holiday event. “It’s a very, very popular, in-demand neighborhood,” says Dan Hawkins, a Realtor with Hawkins Team Real Estate at Realty Concepts and lifelong Fresno County resident. “Everyone in Freson wants to live there.”

Christmas Tree Lane is the signature event of an active community
The neighborhood values its traditions, most notably the annual Fig Garden Christmas Tree Lane. Sponsored by the Home Owners Association, the holiday event dates back to 1920, with only two blackouts, during World War II and the 1973 energy crisis. Each December, the street is magically transformed into a one-way thoroughfare lined with hundreds of trees and dazzling light displays. “I believe it’s the largest drive-thru event of its kind in the United States,” Hawkins says. “Every year for about three weeks, Van Ness Boulevard is closed at night so cars can drive through and see the decorations. On two nights, it’s walking only, and thousands come for that. They get the schools involved and there’s singing. It’s pretty cool.” Traditional community organizations also play a large role in the neighborhood. In addition to the active Home Owners Association, there’s the Fig Gardens Women’s Club, founded in 1921. “They have antique sales, a lot of activities and several events throughout the year,” Hawkins says. In addition to the antique sales, Octoberfest, a maker’s market craft faire and Trash to Treasure, a weekend fundraiser in November that is essentially a giant yard sale of items collected throughout the year, are among featured events. Social activities include monthly meetings that revolve around movies, books, knitting and more topics of interest. The organization also supports the community’s philanthropic efforts and awards scholarships to select residents.

Wide variety of home sizes and styles can be found
The neighborhood is known for its well-maintained historic homes and estate-sized lots with mature landscaping. “Large lots with older homes; very classic,” Hawkins says. “There are just a lot of really neat houses.” Dating as far back as the early 20th century, homes were built according to the style of the day. Decorative Tudors, traditional Colonials, bungalow-style homes and collection of ranch-style homes mingle with contemporary custom remodels and modern-style homes. Sizes range from the cozy confines of the bungalows to more than 5,000 square feet for the neighborhood’s largest homes. Given the diversity of housing, prices range from the mid-$200,000s to almost $2 million. Home values are among the highest in the city, not only because of the size and space they can offer, but also due to private services such as the police district, which is run by the sheriff’s office and includes regular patrols. “It’s extra safe, and people pay extra for that,” Hawkins says.

Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club is a neighborhood institution
Since 1963, the Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club, known as The FIG, has been a favorite gathering spot for tennis, swimming, fitness and social gatherings. The members-only club is set on the grounds of a former estate, surrounded by private homes. “You can also rent it out for private events,” Hawkins says. “We had a class reunion there, and that was really fun.” About 2 miles west of the neighborhood is Oso de Oro Lake Park, a popular waterfront green space featuring multiple children’s playscapes.

Fig Garden Village anchors convenient retail and dining options
For over half a century, Fig Garden Village has been a retail icon. “It’s a high-end shopping center with retail, restaurants and bakeries,” Hawkins says. “They’ve added on to it a few times over the years, and now they even have a Whole Foods.” The Elbow Room, an upscale bar and grill that advertises an artisan approach to comfort food, is among the featured dining destinations. The Lime Lite, an upscale restaurant that has been a local institution for more than 50 years, and Out of the Barrel Taproom, which features a popular beer garden, are other popular options. Less than 3 miles east along Shaw Avenue is a large concentration of retail stores that includes Target, Walmart and Home Depot.
For shopping, Fig Garden Village has major retailers, including a Whole Foods for groceries.
