Quindaro's museums highlight its ties to the Underground Railroad
Living in Kansas City’s Quindaro neighborhood offers homeowners a look into the past. Quindaro traditionally served as an important station along the historic Underground Railroad. Additionally, a weekend visit to the Old Quindaro Museum and the nearby Underground Railroad Museum offers more information about the neighborhood’s rich history.
Bungalow and ranch-style homes from the '40s and '60s
A home in this area can range from around $130,000 for a picturesque home, to $500,000 for a multi-level home with several acres of land. In fact, many of the front yards include prominent trees that are as tall as the home, if not taller. “It’s an affordable place to live,” says Kathy Batesel, a real estate professional at RE/MAX Launch, who has more than 20 years of experience. “You’ll find mostly ranch- and bungalow-style homes built in the 1940s-1960s, and most have basements.”
C-rated public schools and A-rated arts and science academies
Students will start their educational journeys at Welborn Elementary School, graded C-minus by Niche. Shortly thereafter, students will attend Gloria Willis Middle School, a Niche graded C-minus school that has a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-1. When they enter their teenage years, they will attend Washington High School. The school has a Niche grade of C and stands out for its many clubs and activities and college preparation offerings. Additionally, the neighborhood is less than 5 miles from the Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, a public high school, with an A grade according to Niche, that accepts students based on performance. “It is one of the best schools in the state,” says Batesel.
Local parks with a lake for fishing, boating and swimming
For greener pastures, Wyandotte County Lake Park, about 7.5 miles away, features Wyandotte County Lake, where you can go boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing. The park also includes an area for picnics, a children’s fishing pond and a playground with swings and a slide.
Community to downtown Kansas City through the nearby Interstates
While you won’t find any public transportation in the area, and the bike lanes are limited, meaning you will be car-dependent, the streets are wide enough to provide plenty of street parking and maneuverability for pedestrians. Commuting to downtown Kansas City is easy when you jump on Interstate 635 and, for about 15 miles, to get to the Missouri side of the city. Interstate 70 can get you to Kansas even faster, where Legends West resides, a dining and entertainment area. Here, you will find the Kansas Speedway, Hollywood Casino, Kansas City Legends Soccer Club, Kansas City Monarchs baseball team and hundreds of dining options, including Dave and Busters, El Potro Mexican Café and Naree Kitchen Thai & Sushi.
Kansas City's barbeque, Chinese and Mexican dining scene
Looking for dining options closer to home? Again, just off I-635, you can find some famous Kansas City barbeque. A local favorite includes The Kansas City BBQ Bistro’s Hickory Log BBQ. If you aren’t in the mood for barbeque, a stop by KC Smoke Burger for American pub fare could be worth it. Panda King is close by as well, two miles, if you are looking for Chinese food. If you are in the mood for Mexican food, Jalisco Restaurant is just over three miles away.
To stock your pantry, stop by the local grocery store in the area, which is Happy Foods North Inc. Here, you can stop in and pick up your produce, meats and non-perishable items for all your meals. About 10 miles away, you will find a Walmart, and an Aldi, just three miles down the street. Six miles up the road and, across the Missouri River, you will find the renowned Riverside Red X grocery and oddities store. “People come from all over the area to see Riverside Red X” Batesel says. At this establishment, you’ll find unique collections, including glass eyeballs, bells, taxidermy animals and several other displayed curiosities. The store once held more than 10,000 bells and other antiques before the store owner decided to auction most of the collection.
