A sunlit creek and quiet streets
Normanskill sits just 6 miles outside the Capital Region, but the community has more of a rural village feel than a suburban neighborhood. The community’s name points to its Netherlandic heritage. “Normans” is Dutch for a Norwegian person, and "kill" means creek. “Normanskill is a quiet, family-oriented place to live. It is one of the higher-end neighborhoods in Albany,” says Arpi Balgin, a Realtor with Berkshire Home Services who grew up in Albany. “The community is walkable to golf courses, hospitals and major highways.” St. Peter’s Hospital is under 2 miles away. A low crime score of 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index adds to Normanskill’s serenity.
Despite the nearby conveniences, quiet streets, wooded spaces and a rippling, sunlit creek make this residential area seem like a haven removed from city life. The 45-mile-long Normans Kill is an important tributary to the Hudson River. During Colonial Times, the waterway was a source of hydropower and up through the Industrial Revolution, it provided ice to parts of New York City. Today, it is a popular place for recreation. Stocked with smallmouth bass, freshwater drum and yellow perch, Normanskill Creek, as locals call it, is known for its great fishing.
Normanskill is a quiet and quaint community in Albany.

Single family homes with curb appeal
Normanskill is laid out on gridded streets with numerous cul-de-sacs. Modest landscaping and mature shade trees provide curb appeal. This neighborhood has are few sidewalks but the roads are wide, and the traffic is light. The housing portfolio consists primarily of single-family homes — colonials, raised ranch styles and split-levels are common. There are also some townhouses and the occasional contemporary home here. Gas fireplaces help heat many of the area's homes through the winter months. Many homes include driveways and attached garages, but plenty of on-street parking exists. Inventory is low, but when homes come on the market, there's a wide price range. Balgin says the price range in the area for single-family homes is between $300,000 and $490,000.
