Lower home prices and accessibility in the West End
Albany’s West End neighborhood sits just 2 miles from downtown and offers relatively low housing costs for the city. “People who are just starting their families may come here,” says Sarah Trojanski, a licensed real estate salesperson with Sterling Real Estate Group, who has sold in Albany for six years. “Housing is less expensive here than in surrounding areas.” Another significant draw is the neighborhood’s proximity to both commercial development and nature within an urban landscape. Locals can walk the residential streets and reach a park or hop on Central Avenue to reach shopping and dining options within 1 to 2 miles.
Victorian styles dominate the housing market
Buyers will find a mix of Victorian rowhouses and detached homes. For an entire multifamily property or a single-family house, prices typically range from $100,000 to $300,000. Other Albany areas, like Buckingham Lake-Crestwood have homes that surpass $400,000. The neighborhood has an urban feel, with tree boxes lining the busy sidewalks and cars often parallel-parked along the streets. However, residents can typically see a park from their window or get to one within walking distance.
Education through the City School District of Albany
Students may apply to any school in the City School District of Albany, regardless of their assigned zones. Elementary school kids typically start at either Roots Academy at West Hill, which earns a C rating from Niche, or Pine Hills Elementary, rated C-plus. Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle gets a C-plus, and Albany High has a B-plus. High school students may participate in career and technical education programs, including those in health sciences and construction.
Parks and preserves in the city
The West End has a mix of recreational spaces with a variety of facilities. Swinburne Park anchors the neighborhood with open fields, basketball courts and a skating rink. The Bleecker Stadium, adjacent to the park, hosts youth football and baseball games. Colby Park has a playground and additional basketball courts. Next door in West Hill, the Tivoli Lake Preserve offers 80 acres of trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. It also has a fishing reservoir and sheep grazing the meadows during the summer and fall.
Businesses on Central Avenue and downtown
Most restaurants are situated along Central Avenue, ranging from fast-food chains to local spots. Jack’s Diner operates out of an old train car and features a retro dining room with red bar stools and booths. Other options are downtown, about 2 miles away. “Albany has a lot of cute shopping areas, concert venues and restaurants nearby,” Trojanski says. The Iron Gate Cafe serves breakfast and lunch in an outdoor garden. Copper Crow is a popular spot for an appetizer and a drink. “It’s in a historic brewery building,” Trojanski says. “It’s a stylish space with good cocktails.”
For groceries, the neighborhood has a Market 32 by Price Chopper and the Honest Food Co-op. Additional shopping centers are within 1 mile on Central Avenue, with businesses including Hannaford and Home Depot. The nearest Target and the Colonie Center indoor mall are 5 miles away.
Transportation options and access to health care
The neighborhood is sandwiched between State Route 5 and Interstate 90. The Capital District Transportation Authority provides bus services throughout the area. Residents can reach the Albany Medical Center within 2 miles, and the international airport is 8 miles north.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
