Public transportation includes the free bus system, ABQ RIDE. Several miles east of the neighborhoods is Tramway Boulevard Northeast, the area's main north-to-south artery. It's about 10 miles to downtown Albuquerque and the Alvarado Transportation Center. Rio Metro's New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter line and Amtrak are also available. Albuquerque International Sunport serves the region and is roughly 13 miles southwest of Academy Estates EastNearby shopping centers like Sycamore Plaza and the Promenade
Just blocks to the northwest is the intersection of Academy Road Northeast and Wyoming Boulevard Northeast, where Sycamore Plaza shopping mall is located. Restaurants include Tasty Pot for soups and Taiwanese appetizers. There's also a Smith's grocery store and a Walmart Supercenter. To the east on Eubank Boulevard Northeast is the Promenade shopping mall, which includes a hardware store and Bosque Brewing Heights Public House. Bosque has sandwiches, New Mexican spirits and street tacos.Also at the Promenade is Fat City Eats, Treats & Sweets, featuring locally inspired baked goods. "We always try to emphasize local ingredients from farmers and use local ideas throughout our menu," says Keith Garcia, co-owner of the shop. "'Fat City' is a term for a prosperous place. Our main goal is to show how prosperous New Mexico is and encapsulate all the fun things that people might be missing." The business sources fruits, nuts and other ingredients from around the state.
