Del Norte’s educational roots in Albuquerque

Del Norte is an established neighborhood in northeast Albuquerque whose community and culture revolve around its local high school. Founded in 1964, Del Norte High School serves over 1,000 students and has won 11 state championships in various sports. As more houses were built in the 1970s, more people began moving to the neighborhood to be close to the high school and nearby amenities. “It’s predominantly single-family homes,” says Jason Lieberman, a local broker and owner of Albuquerque House Hunting. “Mostly young professionals and families live in that area.” With a convenient location between several shopping centers and a golf course, Del Norte residents are minutes away from anything they need.

Townhomes and Midcentury Modern homes

Most homes are clustered to the west, near San Pedro Drive, and tend to be smaller than the national average of 1,926 square feet. Many are contemporary, ranch-style or Midcentury Modern houses. They range in price from $300,000 to $585,000. Many townhomes have stucco exteriors, flat roofs and gated entrances. They can sell from $230,000 to $380,000, depending on their size. The community has more renters than homeowners, and apartment complexes are concentrated on the eastern side of the community.

An education at Del Norte High School

The community is zoned for Albuquerque Public Schools, which earns a B on Niche. C-rated Governor Bent Elementary School offers special education and after-school clubs, while Cleveland Middle School has a STEM program and earns a B-plus. Del Norte High School earns a B-minus and has fine arts programs for band, choir and theater, as well as an Air Force Jr. Reserve Officers' Training Corps.

A nearby interstate and ABQ Ride buses

Interstate 25 is located west of the neighborhood and runs throughout the city. ABQ Ride buses have multiple stops along Montgomery and San Mateo Boulevard that transport passengers to nearby neighborhoods and the Albuquerque International Sunport, which is around 10 miles south. Lovelace Women’s Hospital is about a mile west and is open for 24 hours. The CAP Index Crime Score is 7 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4.

Par for the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course

The biggest recreational offering close to Del Norte is the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course, a 27-hole course that’s open to the public. In addition to several acres of lush greenery, sand traps and water hazards, the golf course also features a driving range and a pro shop. “It’s probably the most popular golf course in Albuquerque,” Lieberman says. Montgomery Park is directly south of the neighborhood and has a playground, tennis courts and a dog park. Cliff's Amusement Park opened in 1959. It has rides for small children and thrill seekers, plus a water park, tucked into about 15 acres between the Del Norte neighborhood and I-25. Hours are seasonal.

Shopping plazas and nearby chain restaurants

Montgomery Plaza sits along the southwestern side of the neighborhood and has department stores such as Burlington’s, Ross Dress For Less and T.J. Maxx. The Republic Square Shopping Center is located on the southeastern corner and has restaurants such as Red Lobster, Little Caesars and Twisters Burgers & Burritos. There are even more chain restaurants along San Mateo Boulevard, including Sonic, Schlotzsky's and Long John Silver's. The Shoppes at San Mateo has a few salons and spas and is anchored by an Absolute Fitness gym. The closest grocery stores are Albertson's, Sprouts Farmers Market and Smith's supermarket.
