Ranch- and Craftsman-style homes on small lots
Sidewalk-lined streets offer midcentury ranch- and Pueblo Revival-style homes, built between the 1950s and 1985, and range from $200,000 to $350,000. Many sit on up to quarter-acre lots, featuring earth-toned stucco exteriors, flat roofs and driveways leading to two-car garages; some have paved pathways extending from sidewalks to front doors, with front and back yards enclosed by metal or wooden fences. Toward the southern end, pockets of newly constructed Craftsman-style homes built between the early-2010s and the present start at $390,000, and folks can walk or bike along sidewalks.Ball fields, a gravel trail and casino
Set south of Interstate 40, Jerry Cline Park offers soccer fields and tennis courts, as well as a playground for youngsters; locals can walk the roughly 1-mile gravel-packed trail that loops around the park here, or bike the northern path toward the Winrock Town Center shopping mall. Known locally as Albuquerque Downs, the Downs Racetrack & Casino roughly a mile south mixes annual horse races and blackjack with fine dining, plus live music and karaoke at the First Turn Lounge inside the casino.Albuquerque district schools
Students can attend Albuquerque district schools like Mark Twain Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, then continue to C-rated Hayes Middle. According to Auto Body News, in early 2024, B-minus-rated Highland High announced it’ll launch an auto body certification program beginning fall of 2024, offering a $1,000 stipend to students who complete the pilot program.Barrel racing, Jiu Jitsu and a farmers market
Fairgrounds is home to the 236-acre Expo New Mexico, a multi-use entertainment and events facility. Every September, locals watch barrel races and bull riding before listening to top recording country artists at the New Mexico State Fair, as well as hit up their year-round outdoor flea market. Jiu Jitsu Championships are held at the Expo’s Manuel Lujan Jr. Exhibit Complex, while the Watercolor Society takes place in the Fine Arts Building. Two miles north, locals can stock up on fresh veggies at the Alvarado Park farmers market throughout the spring and fall; vendors also sell handmade crafts and jewelry.Accessible interstate, public buses and bike lanes
Lomas, Louisiana and San Mateo Boulevards are the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares, and locals can travel the roughly 7 miles west to downtown Albuquerque via Lomas Boulevard or Interstate 40; rush hour commute times average up to 15 minutes. Albuquerque RIDE buses take residents into downtown and neighboring communities, while bike lanes straddle Fairgrounds’ eastern border. The Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital is roughly 2 miles northeast, and the city’s airport, Albuquerque International Sunport, is about 7 miles southwest.Chicken pot pies, coffee and peppers
To the northwest, country-themed signs adorn the walls of family-owned Christy Mae’s Restaurant, serving “Albuquerque turkey, chicken pot pies with corn bread and chicken salad since 1982,” says owner Larry Ashby, who’s been in the restaurant business for 45 years. “We can feed a family of 4 for about $40 since we only charge $2.99 for kids under 12; we try to help folks out here as best we can.” Further west, residents can refuel with an espresso from Humble Coffee Company, then peruse Nordstrom Rack at the Winrock Town Center shopping mall 2 miles north, before reaching Smith’s for groceries. Across from Smith’s is Sichler Farms, an outdoor market kiosk featuring hot roasted green chiles and hanging clusters of spicy peppers, open from August through October.
