Major employers and regional thoroughfares in Los Volcanes
The Los Volcanes neighborhood of western Albuquerque is located between some of the most widely used thoroughfares in town. “There are two major highways in town, and one is within two to three minutes of the neighborhood,” says Anthony Martinez, a Realtor and sales manager for The Maez Group. “You can get anywhere in the state. It’s convenient if you work in the east side, Rio Rancho or even down toward Los Lunas.” In addition to commuters, several industrial employers—like PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and other major food and beverage distributors—benefit from access to Interstate 40 and other regional highways. Residential pockets, community athletic centers and restaurants are sprinkled throughout Los Volcanes as well.
Los Volcanes is surrounded by state routes and Interstate 40
Los Volcanes is in a prime location for travel, tucked between several major thoroughfares. Interstate 40 travels toward downtown Albuquerque—about 5 miles away—and traverses the entire state from east to west. On the neighborhood’s west side, New Mexico state Route 345 connects to other western suburbs of Albuquerque and other, larger thoroughfares. Coors Boulevard runs alongside the neighborhood as well and converges with Central Avenue, which connects to downtown Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico campus. ABQ RIDE buses stop along both Coors Boulevard and Central Avenue, bringing passengers to downtown Albuquerque and its western suburbs free of charge.
Pockets of Pueblo- and Spanish Revival-style homes
A few residential pockets are scattered throughout the otherwise industrial Los Volcanes. Single-story bungalows and two-story new traditional homes with Pueblo and Spanish Revival influences line sun-bleached sidewalks. Most homes in the neighborhood were built starting in the late 1990s through the 2010s in various shades of beige and tan that echo their sandy surroundings. Many homes have sandy, fenced backyards and range between $260,000 and $350,000.

Diné language at Tres Volcanes Community Collaborative School
Neighborhood children may start their K-12 journeys at Susie Rayos Marmon Elementary School, which earns a C grade from Niche. For grades 6 through 8, they may move forward to B-rated Tres Volcanes Community Collaborative School, which offers a Bilingual Multicultural Education Program in Diné, the language of the Indigenous Navajo people. Students may finish their secondary studies at West Mesa High School, which receives a C-plus and offers regionally specific history and culture courses. Students can choose from courses like Mexican American Studies, Mexican American Literature, New Mexico History and even Mexican Folk Dance or Mariachi to honor the unique history and culture of the Southwest.
Swimming at the West Mesa Aquatic Center
Cedar Ridge—an open stretch of land—is the neighborhood’s only proper green space. Residents can travel north to Laurelwood Park for its playground, shaded picnic area and plush grass in the warmer months. A trail starting in the neighborhood weaves alongside the interstate, eventually leading to the west bank of the Rio Grande. “It’s probably a five- to six-minute walk to the trail system that leads to the river,” Martinez says. Though Los Volcanes may not be rich in open outdoor space, it’s home to the West Mesa Aquatic Center, which has the city’s newest Olympic-sized pool and underwent its latest wave of renovations in 2023. The competitive pool is equipped with 1- and 3-meter diving boards and stadium seating. Housed in a sleek, wave-shaped building, the center also has an indoor recreation pool and an outdoor recreation pool, both available for daily entry fees as low as $3 for adults.
Home to Albuquerque staples like Blake’s Lotaburger and Dion’s
Most of the neighborhood’s eateries are on its eastern side, along Coors Boulevard. Mariscos Altamar has served fresh seafood like lobster tail, seabass topped with sauteed octopus, seafood ceviche and whole fried fish since 1997. Margaritas with a generous rim and other elaborately garnished cocktails are also available. Farther south on Coors Boulevard, Blake’s Lotaburger is a famous New Mexican chain, home to the Original Green Chile Cheeseburger. Smith’s grocery store shares a plaza with Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Dion’s, a Southwestern pizza chain. “The neighborhood is very close to iconic Albuquerque staples, like Dion’s,” Martinez says.
