A midcentury suburb in the shadow of the Sandia Mountains
Despite its position on the northeast side of the city, SY Jackson is often at the center of discussion among the area’s prospective homeowners. “It’s pivotal to the Northeast Hills area of Albuquerque,” says Associate Broker Russell Payson of Coldwell Banker Legacy, who has 6 years of experience in the area. “It’s close to good restaurants and the hospital, it’s only a few minutes from the interstate and the school district is particularly sought-after. It’s where all the locals want to live.” The canyon on its northern boundary connects the community to the Sandia Foothills, one of the largest outdoor recreation spaces in the area. Residents of SY Jackson enjoy quick access to city amenities, hiking trails and major regional employers from a comfortable perch in the shadow of the eastern mountains.

More midcentury brick cottages than stucco sided homes
The tightly woven residential streets of SY Jackson have a decidedly midcentury atmosphere. “It’s almost all residential, and the houses there are generally older,” Payson says. “It’s pretty typical of the Northeast Heights area – a lot of single-story ranch-style homes, a few two-story Modern builds. It was built primarily in the 1970s, so you’ll find a lot more brick than Southwestern stucco siding.” Many front lawns have been xeriscaped, replacing traditional Kentucky bluegrass with stones, sand and cacti more in keeping with Albuquerque’s high desert climate. Prices range from $290,000 to $560,000 depending on square footage, style and number of bedrooms.

They then proceed to Eisenhower Middle, also rated A-minus. “Eisenhower has a public pool on campus, which is pretty cool,” Payson says. Other nearby options include the Smith’s across Tramway Boulevard and the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Montgomery Boulevard. Residents can pick up daily household necessities at the Target on Montgomery, as well. Popular local restaurants like Flying Star Café, which serves breakfast all day, and Howie’s Sports Page, open from 10 AM to 2 AM every Sunday during the NFL regular season.

Surface streets like Montgomery Boulevard are the most direct routes to downtown
Montgomery Boulevard frames the southern boundary of the neighborhood, connecting residents to Interstate 25 and downtown Albuquerque. Tramway Boulevard, the most direct route south to Interstate 40 and Kirtland Airforce Base, forms the eastern border. “On a map, it may look like it’s a long way from the city,” Payson says. “But the thing about Albuquerque is that you can get pretty much anywhere within a 15 to 20-minute drive. Even with traffic, it’s never particularly unmanageable.”
Hiking from Bear Canyon to the Sandia Foothills
The Bear Canyon Open Space sits just north of SY Jackson, offering local hikers access to trails leading east to the mountains. “It’s a short distance to trails and hiking in the Sandia Foothills,” Payson says. “There are a lot of options for getting outside.” There are roughly 200 miles of trails winding through the Sandia Mountains, so residents have no shortage of opportunities for exploration. For those who prefer more structured activities, city amenities like the Glenwood Hills tennis courts and the Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course are also nearby.
