Uptown Albuquerque has evolved into an upscale shopping district

Uptown is a trendy pocket of Albuquerque filled with numerous upscale stores and restaurants, but it wasn’t always that way. “It’s one of the newest, coolest, hippest areas,” says Chris Shain Tanner, a team lead with Keller Williams Realty and the president of the Greater Albuquerque Association of Realtors. “There’s been a ton of intentional commercial development into old, dilapidated areas — especially the Winrock mall, which wasn’t utilized heavily for decades.” Winrock Town Center is one of three major shopping centers in the neighborhood; one of its most recent upgrades is a new green space with artistic touches. “There have been revitalization projects that have been attempted and were not successful. Uptown is not one of them. … It’s one of our success projects,” Tanner says.

Midcentury ranch-style homes, condos and apartments in Uptown

While Uptown is dense with apartments — over 60% of residents rent their homes — detached midcentury homes and condos make up the other share of the housing market. Ranch-style homes built during the 1950s and the 1960s come with paved or tiled back patios, ranging between $215,000 and $525,000.
Studio units, as well as one- and two-bedroom condos, in the Winrock Villas Condos community go from $100,000 to $210,000. These homes come with monthly homeowners association (HOA) fees that range between $250 and $530, covering utilities, property taxes and on-site security. Mid-rise luxury units in the middle of the neighborhood’s commercial district fetch from $560,000 to $1.2 million; HOA fees range from $750 to over $1,200.

Several shopping centers and a number of upscale chain restaurants

South of Menaul Boulevard, Uptown is filled with stores and upscale chain restaurants. The Coronado Center is anchored by Macy’s, while the ABQ Uptown mall has national names, like Pottery Barn, Gap, Anthropologie and Carhartt. Winrock Town Center is also nearby, with stores like Dillard’s and Nordstrom Rack. Trader Joe’s and Target are in the mix as well.
Upscale chain restaurants, including The Cheesecake Factory, Fogo de Chao Brazilian and Ruth’s Chris Steak House, are sprinkled throughout these shopping complexes. In the same vein, Season 52 serves upscale dishes, like Kona-crusted lamb loin, Chilean sea bass and Maine lobster tail, paired with seasonal cocktails and an extensive selection of wine. “That’s where I chose to take our board for our Christmas party,” Tanner says. “It has smaller portions and more reasonable prices.” For a more laid-back meal, shoppers can stop by Sunnyside Up for skillets, scrambles and other breakfast classics.

Winrock Town Center’s new green space and nearby tennis courts

Green space and outdoor recreation are consciously incorporated into Uptown’s design. Winrock Town Center boasts a newly developed green space, accented by an abstract sculpture and a rocky pond with tumbling waters. The space, which opened in 2024, sits between the mall’s stores and serves as a gathering place, especially for holiday celebrations. Walking paths encircle a playground, a soccer field and tennis courts at Jerry Cline Park, across the highway. Tennis players will find six more courts in Zuni Park, tucked in a more residential pocket of Uptown.

Various school zones divide Uptown and create several pipelines

Uptown is divided into several different school zones. Some children may begin their K-12 journeys at Zuni Technology and Communication Magnet Elementary School, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche. However, those who live in the southeast portion of the neighborhood are zoned for B-rated Inez Science and Technology Magnet Elementary School. The southern half of Uptown is zoned for B-rated Grant Middle School, while students in the north may attend Cleveland Middle School, which scores a B-plus. The Del Norte High School zone covers the western half of the neighborhood, and the school itself maintains a B-minus grade. Students on the eastern side of Uptown may conclude their secondary studies at Sandia High School, earning an A-minus. Sandia High offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma and Air Force Junior ROTC program, as well as various academically focused student organizations.

Walkable part of town connected to major shopping areas and downtown

Uptown is situated north of Interstate 40, which connects the area to downtown Albuquerque, a little under 8 miles away. Menaul Boulevard traverses the neighborhood on its way east to west through most of eastern Albuquerque. ABQ Ride Bus 8 follows the thoroughfare, which passes several major commercial areas. Bus 157 also stops throughout Uptown before heading south toward Kirtland Air Force Base and northwest to the suburbs. For shorter trips, residents will find that Uptown is easy to navigate on foot or by bike.
