Local businesses and Amarillo industry shape Mesa Verde
Amarillo has always been a city led by agriculture and railways, and Mesa Verde is one of many communities that blends everyday life with industrial infrastructure. The neighborhood consists of rows of compact bungalows built alongside main roads and train tracks. As one of Amarillo’s established, midcentury neighborhoods, Mesa Verde does not have the large parks and shopping centers that are more common in the city’s more recently built communities. Local-owned restaurants and a strong presence of local churches and houses of worship bring life to the small neighborhood. Mesa Verde also benefits from being close to major roads like U.S. Route 66, making it easy to commute to major employers like Amarillo’s health care systems.
North Mesa Verde is mostly open land for those looking for acreage.

Amarillo City Transit traverses Route 66
Mesa Verde is close to one of Amarillo’s oldest and most important highways. U.S. Route 66, known locally as East Amarillo Boulevard, connects to downtown Amarillo, 3 miles away. Mesa Verde is 8 miles from the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, the city’s main public airport, and is also 8 miles from large hospitals like Texas Tech University Health System at Amarillo and Amarillo VA Health Care System. Amarillo City Transit’s Routes 22 and 23 both run near Mesa Verde, serving as the main public transportation option.
Markets, restaurants and churches line 24th Avenue
On the south side of Mesa Verde, Northeast 24th Avenue has a collection of quick-service restaurants, including Mexican food at El Sol De Mexico and Chinese takeout at Toom’s Restaurant. For a sweet treat, House of Donuts on North Grand Street and Queen’s Kravings on North 18th Avenue are two nearby dessert shops. Small markets and dollar stores are some of the only retail options in Mesa Verde, like Super Mercado Los Olivos and Dollar General on Northeast 24th Avenue. Northwest 24th Street is also a central place for the community’s houses of worship. The Catholic Diocese of Amarillo is on this street, and Wat Phouttha Samakkheetham Buddhist temple is a mile away on North Eastern Street.

Golf, zoo exhibits and rides at Thompson Memorial Park
Mesa Verde School Park on Beaver Drive, outside of Mesa Verde Elementary School, is the only community park in the neighborhood. The space has minimal amenities and is mainly used for school events. The neighborhood is about 3 miles from larger parks near downtown Amarillo. Thompson Memorial Park on Dumas Drive is a popular place for families, with amenities like a disc golf course, playgrounds, a small zoo and even an amusement park. “Thompson Park is one of Amarillo's largest and most popular parks. Amarillo Zoo is in Thompson Park and Wonderland Amusement Park also in Thompson Park,” says Gabby Valcenia, a Realtor with Century 21 Key Realty who has lived in the Panhandle for over 14 years. “It has a pool, sports fields, a large pond where one can enjoy fishing and boating. Throughout the year, it hosts community events and festivals.”
Golfing next to Thompson Park is a favorite past time for local residents.
One of the highlights at Thompson Park is the playground area making it a favorite for kids.

Midcentury bungalows fill Mesa Verde
Bungalows and ranch-style homes built in the 1950s and 1960s populate Mesa Verde. “This is one our older, more established neighborhoods,” says Melissa Atchley, a lifelong Texan and Associated Broker with Mgroup. “These were growing and developing neighborhoods 50, 60, 70 years ago that are completely developed, so there’s not new construction or anything there.” These small properties are usually no larger than 1,500 square feet and have an average between of $100,000 to $200,000. Most homes are built along major roads and have narrow sidewalks, so it can be difficult to navigate the area on foot. Mesa Verde is also located directly in one of Amarillo’s floodplains, and residents across the city experience high winds, dry heat and seasonal storms throughout the year.
Homes within the neighborhood of Mesa Verde cater to people of all ages.
