Friendly bay village of Amityville
Amityville is a quaint village on South Oyster Bay in the Suffolk County town of Babylon. Established in 1658 by Dutch settlers, Amityville is a staid but growing suburb of New York City on the southwestern quadrant of Long Island. The village is perhaps most famous as the setting for the bestselling book and hit 1979 film "The Amityville Horror." A mass murder in 1974 and reports of paranormal activity by subsequent residents of a Dutch Colonial house inspired the story. Today, residents seem amused by these associations with the neighborhood nicknamed “the friendly bay village.”

Navigating by train, car and water
Two peninsulas, or “necks,” as locals call them, make up the coastal part of the village and are split by several navigable fingertip canals running inland. The village is bisected by the Long Island Railroad, whose tracks divide the area. South Oyster Bay is bordered by Jones Beach Island and Fire Island, making Amityville somewhat of a beach town during the warmer months. Residents can enjoy three state parks and various beaches on the Atlantic Ocean less than 15 miles away. Amityville is also about 40 miles, or 1 hour and 20 minutes by train, from the world-class food and culture of New York City.
Victorians and Colonial Revivals with a median price of $600,000
Most houses are single-family residences but there are a few condos in the area, and new luxury apartment buildings are being constructed. Architectural styles range from remodeled Victorian and Colonial Revival-style homes on the southern waterfront to starter Craftsmans and ranch styles in the northern section. Roughly a third of the properties here are in federally designated flood zones. The median housing price is around $600,000, which is higher than the nationwide median.

Sipping drinks beside a swordfish at Toomey's Tavern
Toomey’s Tavern on the Crik is a favorite of the boating community in Amityville. Located on Narraskatuck Creek on the southwestern border of the village, this seafood dive features live music and a waterside bar where locals can sidle up and drink under a giant taxidermy swordfish. Brownstones Coffee, one location of the popular Long Island chain, and the new Small Craft brewery offer libations for all times of day. Further to the north in the village center, Italian steakhouse Vittorio’s is a Zagat-rated staple of the neighborhood. Cornucopia’s Noshery trades on Amityville’s “horrific” history with gothic-themed décor and popular breakfast and lunch dishes. The nearby Lauder Museum is the site of the local historical society, and the village center is a charming place to stroll and shop.
Carney's Irish Pub & Restaurant is a go to for great food and drink for the locals of Amityville.

Enjoying the water at James A. Caples Memorial Park
James A. Caples Memorial Park is the most popular in the village with its own bayside beach. This waterfront park occupies a large swath on the southeastern peninsula of the village and features a lighted softball field, a soccer field and kayak rentals, plus swimming and sailing lessons. Peterkin and Pearsall Parks are on the northern side of the city. Peterkin is the larger of the two with Hartmann’s Pond, named after a pioneering businessman, making up half of the park. A walking trail encircles the pond, and a picnic area and large playground are bordered by luxury apartments. Nautical Park is at the terminus of the largest canal in the village and offers a gazebo and benches as well as docking slips for residents who prefer to get around by boat.

Halloween parades and the Fall Musicale
Amityville Music Hall is run by residents dedicated to promoting and cultivating the music scene on Long Island. The venue hosts local alternative bands on most weekends. Fans of a slower tempo may enjoy the annual Fall Musicale produced by the Amityville Historical Society, which features local musicians playing popular compositions from the 19th and 20th centuries. Park Elementary School hosts a Halloween parade every year, and Amityville High School has a yearly blood drive. Amityville is home to five churches, a synagogue and a mosque. Many residents of this rather traditional community attend weekly services. These houses of worship in turn serve as cultural centers for neighbors of common faiths.
