North Star blends city access with laid-back residential living
Convenient to the downtown and midtown areas of Anchorage, residential North Star is situated between the commercial West Northern Lights Boulevard on the south and a mile-long stretch of parkland to the north. Residents here have their pick of coffee shops, restaurants and plenty of outdoor places to picnic and play. Gary Cox, Real Estate Licensee with Real Estate Brokers of Alaska, who is known as the Alaska Real Estate King, says, “North Star is the heart of the city, and you’ll see a mixture of businesses and older single-family homes along with a few apartments. It’s a super convenient location that’s central to everything, with eclectic neighborhood pockets throughout.” If you like living comfortably between a greenbelt and midtown, your home search may be pointing to North Star.
Remodeled midcentury housing options
North Star offers both condos and standalone homes in a variety of sizes and price points. Condos built in the ‘70s can range from a 780-square-foot unit for $165,000 to an 1,100-square-foot condo for $220,000. Near nature trails, a 2,300-square-foot duplex built in the ‘60s can ask $535,000. You’ll also see remodeled 3,800-square-foot homes built in the ‘60s with earthtone siding for $600,000 and 4-plex homes built in the ‘70s for $615,000. “It’s an appealing area where values are going up,” says Cox, “and homes are being remodeled, so value per square foot is on the rise, based on proximity.”
Greenbelt trails and parks offer a daily dose of outdoor recreation
The neighborhood borders suburban oases throughout the greenbelt that surrounds Chester Creek, which Cox says “runs all the way from east to west along the north side of North Star.” Here, the Westchester Lagoon Nature Trail winds past Chester Creek and connects to the Chester Creek Trail, considered a birder’s wonderland. You can follow the trail east to Valley of the Moon Park, one of the most frequented parks in Anchorage. It’s equipped with the city’s tallest play structure, athletic lawns and a sizable fenced dog park. Further east at the Charles W. Smith Memorial Park, you can stroll the Chester Creek Trail to picnic spots around a small playground. “It’s parkland the whole way through. And if you live near this greenbelt in North Star, you can bike or walk into downtown on several through-streets that lead over the creek and past the park," Cox says.
Local schooling in North Star
Public school students can start their education at North Star Elementary School and then head to Romig Middle School, which earns an overall B+ grade from Niche. Students then move on to West High School, recognized by Niche with an overall A grade.
Local restaurants, shopping essentials and big-name retailers
West Fireweed Lane intersects central North Star, and is peppered with several multicultural eateries including Fressen, specializing in German fare, and Pho’ Vietnam #8, serving authentic Viet and Thai dishes. On West Northern Lights Boulevard, you have your choice of quirky coffee huts such as Alaska House of Coffee and Rush Espresso Bar as well as the large Midtown Shopping Mall which gathers an REI, Nordstrom Rack, Barnes & Noble and Carrs grocery store. You can also make it date night at Bear Tooth Theatrepub, to catch an indie film or concert while enjoying pub grub, wine and microbrews. Says Cox, “North Star offers all the amenities of city living. There’s a Walmart, Fred Myers, malls and banking centers — all right within North Star or in the vicinity. It’s not really a ‘walking city’ but you can get to so many essentials so easily.”
