Strawtown combines a farmtown feel with the convenience of nearby town centers
The White River has been the longstanding heart of Strawtown, from the Indigenous peoples who cultivated its land years prior to its settlement to the farmers who would use it for floating wood down to Indianapolis centuries later. Today, this unincorporated community in central Indiana caters to those seeking a quiet, rural setting. “When it comes to Strawtown, if you blink, you miss it,” says Lisa Aerna, who has 27 years of selling experience in the greater region. “If someone is moving out there, they are doing so to live in the country.” Though its residents still share much of the area with agricultural fields, Strawtown Koteewi Park offers abundant recreation, and the stores and restaurants of Cicero and Noblesville are within 7 miles.
Strawtown Koteewi Park, Purgatory Golf Course and a local campground keep locals active
At Strawtown Koteewi Park, local history combines with outdoor recreation. “It’s a very popular park,” Aerna says. “It has a fishing pond and all kinds of bike trails. People also take their horses there to ride the trails.” The Taylor Center of Natural History details the area’s Indigenous past, and the adjoining Koteewi Trace features life-size dwellings of the White River’s first inhabitants. Other park features include a canoe launch for paddling the river, an archery range and snow tubing slopes that stay busy during winter. Locals can also spend a weekend at White River Campground or an afternoon at Purgatory Golf Course, which offers an 18-hole public course.
Ranch-style homes and farmhouses share the community with crop fields
Crop fields where corn and soybeans sprout during the warm months and patches of forest flank Strawtown's narrow residential roads. Ranch-style homes on quarter- to half-acre lots cluster near the community's center, with old-growth trees making up most of the surrounding terrain. Strawtown's outer edges give way to a more rural setting, with longer driveways and farmhouse-style properties, some on plots of land that reach over 4 acres. Build dates in the community span from the early 1900s to as recently as the 2010s. Homebuyers can expect a price range from $175,000 to $500,000 for larger, recently remodeled properties on more land. The community's CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Noblesville and Cicero have plenty of options for shopping and dining
Though the community has Strawtown Flea Market and a few other local businesses, most residents run errands in Noblesville, 7 miles southwest. Stony Creek Marketplace and Town & Country Shopping Center sit back from State Route 37 and offer various big-box stores and retailers, including Kohl’s, Walmart Supercenter and T.J. Maxx. Grocers like Aldi and several chain restaurants are also available along the stretch. Four miles west in Cicero, Boathouse Kitchen & Swan Dive serves traditional bar grub on the patio overlooking Morse Lake. “The Mexican restaurant in town is also a big hit,” Aerna says about La Cascada next door.
Hamilton Heights High School students can earn college credit
Hamilton Heights Elementary School has a B-minus grade on Niche. Hamilton Heights Middle School scores a B-plus, and Hamilton Heights High School earns a B. The high school works with The Pursuit Institute, where students can earn college credits and industry certifications while working with local businesses and community partners. Career pathways include Health Sciences, education and several others. Our Lady of Grace Catholic School is the nearest private option, 5 miles out.
Commuting around Strawtown and down to Indianapolis
State Route 37 cuts through Strawtown and leads 7 miles southwest to Noblesville and downtown Indianapolis, 33 miles in the same direction. Strawtown Avenue is the community’s other primary road, connecting the area to Cicero, 4 miles west, and Anderson, 15 miles east.
